The Monkey and The Turtle
SCBWI members Ani Rosa Almario, Carla Pacis, and Beaulah Taguiwalo were at the book launch
of Tahanan Books' The Monkey and the Turtle, a Philippine Folk Tale. The event took place on
Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at the big, bright, newly opened Powerbooks, on the 2nd level of
Glorietta 4 at Greenbelt Park, Makati City, Philippines.
The story and illustrations are by Jose P. Rizal, no less than the national hero of the Philippines.
He sketched this old Philippine folk tale onto a guest book belonging to Paz Pardo de Tavera in
Paris in 1885. The English text in this book are Rizal's own, while the vibrantly colored and digitally
enhanced artwork showcase the artistry of sisters Auri Asuncion Yambao and Grace Asuncion.

Pardo de Tavera.
