| First Rescue | |||||||||||||||
| I remeber my first rescue as if it was yesterday. It was during my second year at Soak City. It was a hot day around the beginning of the summer. I was guarding at Chair 4 and the waves were on. I notice a woman at alomst directly between Chair 3 and Chair 4. She is surrounded my a bunch of kids in lifejackets. Probably her children and thier friends. I notice that after a while the waves are starting to exhaust her. Then she starts to struggle, so I blow one long whistle blast and jump in. I swim over to her and help her grasp onto my rescue tube. She then looks straight at me and said, "Thank you so much. I was getting tired and I don't think I could have lasted much longer. The kids all have their lifejackets, so they weren't getting tired. " Then I helped her to climb out of the water and then I had to get back on stand. After a couple of minutes, the Shift Leader came over with the rescue report and asked for me to sign it. But I had so much trouble holding the pen because the adrenaline was still way too high and my hands were still shaking. (After that, I became a pro and eventually my hands stopped shaking so much) | |||||||||||||||
| 'Family' Park | |||||||||||||||
| I remember this story from my first year; but it didn't happen to me. It was a regular day at the river. And as it is known, people try to get away with doing all kinds of things in the river. Well this day there was a boy, about 13 years of age, and he was lying ontop of a girl on one of the purple tubes. So the lifeguard naturally says, 'Can you please not do that, this is a family park.' The kid then replies to her, 'I'm trying to start a family here.' |

| Themed CPR: Year 1 | |||||||||||||||
| During one of the inservices, we are divided into groups and have to come up with a themed CPR. My First year, was the coolest themed CPR. We did Power Rangers. My first year, there were the four team colors and each team had strips of cloth, in their color, for inservices. My team consisted of Me, Bryan, Andi, and her brother David. The first responder, Bryan (a.k.a. the red ranger), came onto the scene and saw that the bad guys were up to something and he needed backup to fight them. So he tweeted onto his whistle the theme call and said to his wrist watch that he needed help to fight the bad guys. So then I came in (as the yellow ranger) doing a cartwheel. I looked around and then called headquarters for even more backup. That is when Andi (the blue ranger) and David (the green ranger) came in. Then each time we had to do something, we would use a fighting technique instead. And they all had really cool fighting style names; unfortunately I can't remember most of them. But my favorite was that instead of saying 'Slow Breath', we said 'Air Blast'. Then at the end for the A.E.D., it was a super-speed device and it made us defeat the enemy in super-speed. We won the competition. (I vaguely remember another group that had Edison as the theme. Instead of saying 'Slow Breath' they said 'The cookies are cold.' And for reassessing, they counted down the mintues that they had left on their break.) |

| For the second year, how can you beat Power Rangers. I don't know, but my team did. We did wrestling. I got to be the victim because I was the girl and I didn't know that much about wrestling. But the guys did great. They all did fighting moves for all of the situations. And the counting for reassessing was like the way they counted when the guys goes down and doesn't come up. The only bad thing was that when they did a couple of the moves, they actually hit me kind of hard, it hurt. But then at the end, when I was to be put in the recovery position, one of the guys picked me up and threw me over his shoulders; like he was going to do the move where they pick up and then fall back wards on you. Then another guy came in with the fanny pack like the championship belt and was yelling 'The winner and still Champion'. We won the inservice that day. | |||||||||||||||
