Brief Bio
It was May 21st 1974, 3:00am, when Catheryn Balk, a belly dancer, gave birth. The father, Solomon Feldthouse; a travelling musician, exclaimed 'Fairuza!' as he saw the vivid blue of his new daughters eyes. Fairuza being Arabic for turquoise, also meaning precious or sacred one.
So Fairuza Alejandra Balk had entered our world, at the age of three months her parents, sadly, split up. She grew up on a sort of ranch north of San Francisco, she was then moved to Vancouver as her mother found work there. In 1982 Fairuza passed a grade 2 ballet exam at The Royal Academy of Dancing. Also that year, at the tender age of 9, she got her first role in a t.v. movie entitled : 'The Best Christmas Pageant Ever'. The following year Fairuza and her mother moved to England.
In 1984 she landed another role in another t.v. film called 'Discovery', Fairuza then spent the rest of that year plus 1985 filming the first mainstream role she had got. That, of course, was Return to Oz. For her star role in this film she was the lucky one out of 1,200 girls applying for the part!
During 1985, between attending openings for Return to Oz, she landed a co-starring role in yet another t.v. film : 'Deceptions'. The following year she went on to make 'The Worst Witch', she started attending the Bush Davies Performing Arts School - she studied there for 2 1/2 years.
For 1987 Fairuza co-starred in 'Poor Little Rich Girl : The Barbara Hutton Story', a t.v. movie. The following year her studies finished, Fairuza, now 15, and her mum travelled to Paris where she had her next role lined up : 'Valmont'. Her and her mum then both got parts in 'The Outside Chance of Maximilian Glick', after finishing filming this they returned to Vancouver. She enrolled in highschool, but her shyness and dyslexia caused her to leave after a short time, this lead to her being taught by correspondence.
In 1991 Fairuza co-starred in a t.v. movie called : 'Deadly Intentions..Again'. The following year she scooped a Best Actress award from Cable Ace Awards by co-starring in 'Shame', a t.v. film. The same year she also got the Independent Spirit Award for Best Actress for her part in 'Gas Food Lodging', again, her mum was also in this film.
From 1992 until present time, Fairuza has had roles in several films (and is currently working on new films) the best known being 'The Craft' (1996), this was the film that has given Fairuza the greatest fame.(See my filmography for a complete list of films Ru has had roles in.) Another key point for her was in 1995, August of that year was when she purchased an old occult shop : 'Panpipes Magickal Marketplace'. She bought this store because it would have been shut down otherwise.
I scoured the web for info and have pieced this together correctly as far as I know. Please contact me if I have made any errors, thanks.
