'70s hits return for another spin

By Gary Levin, USA TODAY

If your memories of KC & the Sunshine Band and Blue Oyster Cult are preserved mostly on vinyl, a TV-inspired '70s sampler can help upgrade your collection.

Two CD soundtracks from the Fox sitcom That '70s Show (Tuesdays, 8:30 p.m. ET) are due in record stores Sept. 28, the day '70s begins its second season.

The Volcano label's That '70s Show Presents That '70s Album will be sold individually: A Rockin' compilation offers such period chestnuts as The Kinks' Celluloid Heroes and Argent's Hold Your Head Up, while a Jammin' CD delves into dance music, with KC's Get Down Tonight and Wild Cherry's Play That Funky Music.

The Rockin' collection also includes a new rendition of the '70s theme song, Big Star's In the Street, which has been re-recorded by Cheap Trick and renamed That '70s Song. A music video featuring the band and the series' cast is being shopped to cable music channels.

The '70s CD set is the latest in a flurry of TV soundtracks, from NBC's Saturday Night Live to WB's Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

"When we decided to do a soundtrack, we wanted to make sure it had a definite connection with the show, which is why every song on the CDs will be heard at some point," says executive producer Mark Brazill.
