| 19 March 2002 4:10 pm Friday There are only a few things that I do NOT like about spring/summer: 1. BUGS - Any kind. They all suddenly appear once the weather gets warm enough. I already have a few bites on my arm. Billie was genius enough to leave her balcony door open last night so a big bunch of bugs came into the house. And the absolutely gross thing that happened tonight: I noticed a gigantor spider web on my car after a spider dropped onto my lap from the sunroof! Rachel and I were driving back from the movie and I felt something and flipped out. I went to the carwash at midnight to wash that stupid web off! And THEN, I saw the same f*cking spider on my car as I was pulling into my driveway. Months and months of bugs is what I'm totally NOT looking foward to. 2. Humidity - I don't mind the heat so much because it gives me an excuse to wear shirts with no sleeves, but when it gets so humid that my skin is perpetually sticky and wearing a thin cotton t-shirt feels like a wool sweater, that's yucky. It makes everything feel so much hotter, like I'm being smothered and leaking. I tend to sweat like mad, and humidity does not help at all. Walking from my car to class takes so much energy out of me that I want to fall asleep. It doesn't help living in the vicinity of a lake, but even when I leave Ithaca to go back home there will be tons of humidity. Joy. 3. Tanning - Yes I like being tan, he1l I was born with one. I like the look of being bronzed, like I'm glowing more than normal. I've even sat out on my balcony to get some color. BUT I don't enjoy the feeling like I'm being baked. It's like I can feel the molecular structure on my skin writhing in pain, screaming as they are burned. I don't get how some people wake up at 9am to sit outside and tan for hours on end just to get a bit darker. Most of the time dark tans on some people look horribly unnatural. I admit I'm a bit biased on this one because I am tan all year round, but for real people, tanning isn't that great for your skin, and it hurts! There are also some things I really like about spring/summer: 1. Nature - For now (before we notice that we're in a draught this season) the waterfalls are gorgeous and spewing water. Leaves are finally starting to come out, flowers are in bloom, and the sailboats are starting to go out onto the lake. The sky is bright and I don't have to worry about snowfall. Driving with my windows down and sunroof open is standard. I like fresh air that doesn't make me feel like my lungs are freezing (a la winters in Ithaca). And I got to feed the ducks and fish at Muller Pond today! It was really calming, actually, and funny to "accidentally" hit the geese on the head with the bread! (Yes I know I can be evil, but they were scaring away my ducks!) 2. Less clothing - This is the time for sandals, tank tops, and skirts. I love having air on my body. I like being able to wiggle my toes or slide off my sandals during class or sitting around. Sandals are so much easier to wear - you just slip them on and off. I like having my arms free to move around without sleeves, and a low neckline so that I don't feel like I'm choking. Plus having air on more of my body surface keeps me cooler. It's just so much less restricting. 3. No school - No more waking up before 8 am, no more tests, papers, or boring classes. Instead I get HOURS more sleep, I get to see my friends who go to school states away, I get to play with my dog, and I get free laundry! Of course, I may be headed for a very long summer vacation unless I get a job soon. Or worse, this is my last summer vacation ever. I guess that means I'd better make this one count! |
