Mary A. Miller was born in Cleveland, Ohio, Dec. 31st, 1847. She came to
Lancaster with her parents, Adam and Probst Miller, when a child of one and
a half years of age. They settled on a farm adjoining the county home farm.
The years of childhood and adolescence were passed in the Lancaster community
and she enjoyed the early days of life in that place.
During the Civil War she enjoyed the privilege of staying with Mrs. Eaton,
wife of the Congregational minister who had gone to the front as a chaplain.
Rev. Eaton was one of the most widely known preachers in the state at that
time, and was pastor of the Lancaster church for about fifty years. His wife
was a lady of rare culture and refinement and Miss Miller enjoyed her association
with Mrs. Eaton. Much of the best social life of the community centered at
the Eaton home and the events of the war were discussed by those who had
relatives engaged in the struggle. Miss Miller had a brother at the front.
He now lives in Kansas and celebrated his fiftieth wedding anniversary last
Christmas day.
Miss Miller was married to Jacob Schreiner March 26, 1867, and took up the
duties of life on the farm where they had the experiences common to a majority
of human kind. She has been the true helpmate in all the duties and responsibilities
of life, heartily enjoying the pleasures and accepting the trials with resignation
as a part of the program meted out to humanity.
