Graph Crocheting

Afghan Stitch

The first step is to learn the stitch.  For this you can use any hook.  Does not have to be an afghan hook as you are only going to be practicing with a few stitches.  Each row is 2 parts.  Part 1 is putting all the stitches on the hook.  Part 2 is taking them off.  Both of these parts make Row 1.

Make a chain of about 30 stitches.  I usually do 31 because you will have 1 left on the hook that I do not count when doing the graph ghans.

Take your hook and go into the 2nd chain from the hook.  YO pull up a stitch.  You now have 2 stitches on the hook but you only did 1 stitch.  This is where I do not count the stitch left on the hook.  Go into the next ch and YO.  Pull up another stitch and keep them all together on the hook.  Continue this across to the end.  You will have 31 stitches on your hook.  This is considered part 1 of Row 1.

Now you will YO and go through 1 stitch on your hook,  Then you will YO and go through 2 stitches.  Continue the YO and 2 stitch all across until you are left with 1 stitch on the hook.  You just completed Row 1.

If you look at your work you will see a vertical bar.  That is where you are going to go into next.  Take the hook and go through the vertical bar, YO and pull through.  2 loops on hook.  Continue this to the last stitch.  This last stitch is a bit tricky.  Take your fingers and kind of pull the stitch out just a little bit.  You will see 2 strands on top and 1 kind of under.  Go through the last stitch just under the 2 strands YO and pull the last loop through the hook.  This makes both sides more even.  Now you should have 31 loops or stitches on the hook.  YO and pull through 1 stitch then YO and pull through 2 stitches until you have 1 left on the hook.  This completes Row 2.

Continue working Row 2 until you are comfortable with the stitch.  When you have all the loops on the hook you should have 31.  If you are counting as you do the first part you will count only 30 as you don't count the one left on the hook.

Next I will attempt simple color changes.
