Who are We?

Scarlet Listeners are student volunteers specially trained to listen actively and without any judgement.  We offer help with problem solving, aid during times of crisis and we can provide information about other resources and services that can offer further assistance.

What is training?

Our peer counselors undergo a semester long training program run by experienced Scarlet Listeners. Training is open to all students attending Rutgers. We focus on communication, basic helping skills, crisis intervention and problem solving.

Who Can Use Our Services?

We are here for anyone in the Rutgers community and the surrounding area. Students and non-students are always welcome to call us.

Our History

Scarlet Listners was first established in 1971 as 56 Place, a drug education center. It then developed into a general peer counseling center to better suit the community's needs. In 2001, 56 place changed its location to Bishop House and became Scarlet Listeners Peer Counseling and Referral Center. Scarlet Listeners serves Rutgers and the surrounding areas and continues to grow and develop to meet their changing needs. We are advised by Rutgers College Counseling Center director, David Chandler, PhD.
