| Some initial considerations on teaching in the UK | ||||
| What you will read here is my personal experience teaching French in secondary schools in the UK. Before coming to the UK, I spent 9 years teaching French, English and ESL in various schools and community colleges in the USA. I have a BS in Education and an MA in TESOL and Bilingual Education. The first thing that you MUST know when you come to the UK is that no matter what credentials you may have in the USA, you will be considered an UNQUALIFIED teacher in England because you will not have British Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). As a result, you will be paid considerably less! As an unqualified teacher, you must find a school that is willing to take you through the QTS process. Beware!! Many schools will make you all the promises in the world but think about it... If you're unqualified, and they are allowed to pay you less... how eager do you think they will be to get you qualified?? While you're thinking about that... let me give you something else to consider... As an unqualified teacher, you will be able to find teaching jobs but they may not be in the kinds of schools you're used to working in. You need to be really honest with yourself. If you're the type of person who does well in an inner city school teaching situation, go for it! These are the types of schools you will be working in. If you're used to working in a typical middle class type of American school or even a provate school.... YOU ARE GOING TO STRUGGLE! Back to Teaching in the UK |
