Perhaps the scariest thing about the government is its ultra-covert, ultra-powerful secret agencies. Some of these are well-known, like the CIA, but others are so secretive that not even their names are on public record. For a long time the NSA was one of these; even though the government now admits to its existence, the details of its budget and operations are still classified. This �shadow government,� un-elected and accountable to no one, gets involved in things like overthrowing democratically-elected leaders in other countries and installing puppet governments in their place; torturing and murdering political dissidents in far-off places; and supplying arms and money to �terrorist regimes� that will later have to be fought in wars like Desert Storm. They are thugs. But, according to the majority viewpoint, they�re our thugs, hired to advance American interests, and so�nothing to worry about. Or are they?
A quick read-through of history will show that �our� thugs have a tendency to turn on us, and will as readily prey on Americans as on foreigners. MK-ULTRA, the CIA�s mind-control program, used unconsenting Americans to test the effects of drugs like LSD. The Department of Defense intentionally exposed cities to radiation, supposedly �harmless� bacteria, and chemicals to study the effects on the populace. People got sick, they died, as a result; but there has never been an apology. The psychiatrist who drove unwitting Americans to suicide with his mind-control attempts was never disciplined, never fired. He certainly never stood trial.
These are not tinfoil-hat conspiracy theories; they are documented facts reported in mainstream media. Though MK-ULTRA was supposedly shut down in the 1970s, there has never been any real incentive for the shadow government to stop its abuses of power, and so there is no reason to believe the abuses of power have stopped. While the average person no doubt feels safe, it was average people who were victimized before. Let me make one thing perfectly clear: It does happen here.
