What measures should be taken to reduce the number of  teens killed in auto accidents? Would raising the age for getting a  drivers license help?

Raising the driving age is not the solution. The  solution is for parents to stop buying their children high-performance cars.  Test-drive one yourself before you put your child behind the wheel of one.

Raising the age would not help. Slowing down, staying alert and finding other  ways to keep teens from being bored would eliminate 80 percent of these  accidents. How can we trust a teenager to respect material things and  another’s life when they are not taught values by our adults? We adults  are making many mistakes in raising our children and they are suffering from  it.

How about a course in common sense for parents for ever thinking their child  is mature enough to handle the responsibility of operating a motor vehicle at  such an age. The draft age, 18, would be far more suitable.

Raising the age is not the answer. Why penalize the good teen drivers because  of the bad ones? I learned to drive when I was 13. I logged a million-plus miles  on trucks and buses. Anyone can learn the mechanics of driving, but defensive  driving is part of the answer. Attitude and courtesy would go a long way.

In a country where speed is glorified, is it any wonder so many teens end up  in an early grave? Intensive mandatory driver’s ed is obviously necessary.

Lower the age for a learner’s permit to 14 and raise the age for a  license to 17. Give the parents three years to let these kids chauffeur them  around. By the time they get their “real” license, the kids will  have enough experience to know how to drive.

Develop R-rated films that demonstrate how a person dies as a result of an  accident. Require new drivers to watch.
