Oconee teen dies in automobile accident

An Oconee County teen-ager died Saturday night after his car veered over to the wrong side of the road and collided with an oncoming Honda Civic, according to the Athens post of the Georgia State Patrol.
Travis Joey Powers, 16, of 1220 Grayson Lane, Bogart, was declared dead about 10 minutes after the accident on Mars Hill Road near Crooked Creek Road. Powers died instantly of blunt trauma to the head and chest, according to Oconee County Coroner John Simpson.
The youth was wearing his seat belt, but the 1990 Honda Accord he was driving had no air bag, Simpson said.
Kevin Frankic, 22, the driver of the other car involved in the accident, was in fair condition in the intensive care unit of St. Mary's Hospital Sunday evening.
Powers was the son of Joe and Lisa Powers of Bogart and a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church. He had attended Oconee County High School and was enrolled at Athens Area Technical College
