Three Gwinnett County teenagers were seriously injured early today when their sport utility vehicle overturned on a neighborhood street near Buford, police said.
All three were ejected from the 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe when it flipped about 12:30 a.m. on Tall Oak Drive near Whitebluff Way, said Gwinnett police Cpl. Ray Dunlap.
"It appears that nobody was seatbelted in," Dunlap said. "Had they been seatbelted in, from the looks of the vehicle, they probably all would have walked away with bumps and bruises."
The injured teens -- a 17-year-old female from Lawrenceville and two 18-year-old males from Buford -- were taken to different hospitals. Their names were not released and their conditions were not immediately available.
"We have not had anybody indicate to us that it looks like anybody is going to die, but with the nature of the injuries and the seriousness of the injuries, that's always a possibility," Dunlap said.
Dunlap said the wreck occurred on a sharp curve on a two-lane neighborhood street. He said investigators are looking into alcohol as a possible factor in the crash.
"It looks like we've got a combination of an inexperienced driver, speed and possibly alcohol," Dunlap said. "They had been at a party, and according to the host of the party, everybody had brought their own refreshments, so it could involve alcohol."
