A 16-year-old driving a 2001 Dodge Ram pickup full of teens was killed when he swerved off a wet Clayton County road and hit a tree, Clayton police said Saturday.
Montrice McMillian of Hampton is the sixth teen to die in an auto accident on metro Atlanta roads since May 24.
He was killed on Crystal Lake Road shortly before midnight Friday. Six teens were injured, two critically. They were all crammed into the cab of the truck, which had two rows of seats, and police believe there may not have been enough seat belts for them all.
Blood samples were taken from McMillian to determine whether he was using drugs or alcohol, a routine measure in a fatal wreck, police said. Results may take several weeks.
Police did not provide the passengers' names. Two were taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston; two to Southern Regional Hospital; and two to Grady Memorial Hospital.
Two of the teens were in critical but stable condition Saturday night. The others were treated and released, Clayton police Capt. Tim Robinson said.
Robinson said that the truck belonged to a friend of McMillian's mother and that the teenager may have taken it without the owner's knowledge.
Robins said investigators still were taking statements from the survivors to determine where the youths were that night.
Five other teenagers died in three separate accidents recently: an 18-year-old from Cobb County was killed in a June 8 wreck; a 15-year-old from Gwinnett County was killed May 30; a 17-year-old from Forsyth County was killed May 28; and two 16-year-olds from north Fulton County died May 24.
More than a dozen teens riding along were injured seriously in those incidents.
