Services are scheduled Tuesday for a Jackson County teen killed Sunday when he wrecked a pickup truck his father had given him two days earlier.

Wesley Roberts, 17, died about two miles from his Pendergrass home when his Ford F-150 went off the shoulder of Ga. 346 and into an embankment, where it struck a tree and flipped, the Georgia State Patrol said. Troopers got the call about the accident about 1:25 a.m. Sunday.

Trooper Mark Cox said Roberts was going too fast to navigate a curve. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to investigators.

The teen's father had bought the truck for his son on Friday, Cox said.

Roberts was a junior at Jackson County Comprehensive High School. Principal Robin Hines said Roberts was a "super kid" who was "well-thought of by our faculty and staff."

Roberts was "just one of those guys that everybody knew and was fun to be around," Hines said.

In his morning announcements Monday, Hines told students it was "OK to be sad. We're all going to miss Wesley."

The funeral for Roberts will be at 4 p.m. at Evans Funeral Home in Jefferson.

Roberts was the second northeast Georgia high school student killed in a traffic accident in the past week.

A week ago, Jenny Marie Melton, 17, of Flowery Branch died in a wreck in neighboring Hall County. Melton was on her way to classes at West Hall High School when her car slammed into a utility pole.

A second Hall County teen was critically injured in another wreck last week. Joey Clarke, a senior at North Hall High School, remains hospitalized at Atlanta Medical Center for injuries sustained in a March 18 wreck.
