Amanda was sitting up in bed talking to her mother and boys. They had come first thing that morning and told Amanda who they were. Lee had called Dotty the previous night and had told her about Amanda having amnesia. He told her to expect Amanda not to remember anything. When her mother and the boys had arrived, Amanda hadnt known who they were. She had felt really bad about not being able to remember her family. Her boys seemed so mature. They seemed to be dealing with this well. They were both so handsome. Although she didnt remember them, her motherly instincts took over, and she felt a surge of love and protection for them.
Okay, boys, Dotty said, We need to get you to school. Tell your mother good-bye.
Bye mom, Phillip and Jamie said in unison.
Good-bye, be good, and have a good day at school, Amanda said.
Just as they were about to leave, Lee walked into the room.
Hi, Lee, Dotty said.
Hi, Dotty. Hi, boys, Lee said.
Well, were off to school now," Phillip said. When mom gets out of the hospital, will you come over and play my video game with me again?
Yes, Id be happy to, Lee said smiling.
All right boys, weve got to go, Dotty said. They all exchanged good-byes, then Dotty and the boys left.
Amanda watched this scene with interest. Lee obviously knew her family, and seemed to get along with them. Lee couldnt be the father of her children she assumed, because the boys had called him Lee, not dad. Amanda was more confused than ever. She had no clue what her relationship with Lee was. The strange thing was that whenever he was around, she felt safe. She couldnt explain why she felt that way, she just did. He obviously cared about her. He had rescued her, and then had come to the hospital the previous night and this morning.
Good morning, Lee said.
Good morning, Amanda said back.
How do you feel? Lee asked.
Better, but still confused about my life, Amanda replied.
Well, the doctor said that is to be expected for now.
I have so many questions that I want answered. How did I end up handcuffed to a chair, bruised and bleeding, not remembering anything? Am I married? If so, where is my husband? I didnt get a chance to ask my mother and the boys that question. I am so frustrated, Amanda ended. She looked up at Lee expectantly for answers.
Lee didnt know what to do or say. He didnt want to give her too much information all at once; he feared it would all be too much for her. Lee smiled at her uncomfortably. He sat down in the chair next to her bed and ran his fingers through his hair.
Amanda noticed that he looked uncomfortable. That just made her want answers to her questions even more. Well, Lee, are you going to answer any of my questions? Amanda finally asked.
Amanda, I dont think you should worry about any of this right now. You should work on getting better. It will all come back to you soon, Lee said, hoping his words were true.
You told me not to worry about it when we were being held captive, Amanda said in a frustrated voice. Why dont you try waking up handcuffed to a chair, not remembering anything and see how many questions you would have.
'She has a point,' Lee thought. Well, actually I have to get to work, Im going to be late. I just dropped by to see how you were feeling, Lee said as he stood up. Amanda rolled her eyes. She knew he was making excuses.
Ill be back later, okay?
All right, Amanda said dejectedly. She knew she wasnt going to win this one.

The CAT scan didnt show anything abnormal. It just showed a swelling of the brain tissue, which is what happens when someone has amnesia. You have a moderate concussion, as well. Im not surprised at that since you had a severe head trauma, the doctor said. We need to keep you a few more nights for observation, and then you can go home.
Amanda was glad she would be able to go home in a few days, wherever home was. The doctor left her room, leaving her alone with her thoughts. Her thoughts continued to drift back to Lee. It was a strange feeling that she couldnt remember him, and yet she felt like she had known him forever. She felt a deep connection with him. It was so confusing. After Lee had rescued her, every time she saw him, her pulse quickened and she didnt know why. She figured she was married, although she hadnt seen her husband, and so she thought it was wrong to be feeling the way she did about Lee. She felt like all her memories and life were just in reach, yet she couldnt grasp them. Amanda was sick and tired of thinking. She just wanted to go to sleep. She was tired.

Amanda was walking down the aisle of a church. She was in a wedding dress. She had a train that flowed behind her and a veil that covered her face. Standing at the alter was none other than Lee Stetson, looking dashing in his tuxedo. Amanda smiled. When she got to the alter, Lee took her hands. He smiled, looking lovingly into her eyes. She smiled back, feeling all the love she had for him coming to the surface. The wedding ceremony began. Before Amanda knew it, Lee was taking her left hand and putting a wedding band on her ring finger saying With this ring, I thee wed...
Amanda woke with a start. She opened her eyes, and looked around to find herself in a hospital room. Why was she here? Suddenly the last two days came rushing back to her. Her dream came back to her as well. She had been getting married to Lee Stetson. Just thinking about her dream flustered her. Of course, that was the exact moment that Lee Stetson walked into her room.
Hi, Lee said.
Um... oh... um...Hi, Amanda stammered, turning red.
Whats wrong? Lee asked.
Um...um, nothing. What time is it? Amanda asked changing the subject.
Lee looked at his watch. Almost six pm, Lee said. He could tell she was quite flustered for some reason and he didnt know why. He sat down in the chair next to her bed.
Amanda stared at him for a moment. She wasnt quite sure why, but she sensed that she and Lee were more than friends. He had risked his life to save her, he continually came to the hospital even though she didnt remember him, he seemed quite concerned about her, her family knew him well and every time she was around him, she felt a deep connection to him. If she was married though, where was her husband and what was her relationship with Lee? She wanted to ask him, but what if they were just friends? She would be embarrassed. Amanda decided it was more important that she knew what their relationship was, so she decided to ask. Lee, can I ask you something?
Of course, Lee said.
Um, well, have we, well, you know... Amandas words trailed off and she paused before continuing, what exactly is our relationship, Lee?
Lee was caught off guard. He didnt know how to answer that question. Telling her the truth would be really hard to explain. The only proof he had of their marriage was their marriage license and his wedding band. Although both of those things would be valid to show her as proof, the fact that nobody else knew about their marriage would be suspicious. Then again, he didnt want to lie to her. If and when she regained her memory, she might be angry with him for not telling her the truth. Lee realized he had been silent for a few moments and that Amanda was looking at him.
Lee sighed. He opted for the truth. He was going to have to eventually tell her, so why not just do it now. Amanda, Lee started. Right at that moment, Dotty and the boys walked into the room. Lee was quite happy for the interruption. The interruptions were something that had happened quite frequently in the past, whenever something was about to happen between them. In the past, he was not happy about those interruptions, this time he was.
Amanda, dear, Dotty said, how do you feel?
Fine, mother, Amanda said in an irritated tone of voice. It looked as if Lee was going to tell her the truth before the interruption. 'Not again,' Amanda sighed. 'Wait, not again?' she thought, 'what was that all about?' The thought was gone before she could even remember it.
Well, I better go, Lee said getting up, so you can spend time with your family.
Without even realizing what she was saying, Amanda said, Dont go.
Lee spun around and looked at her. She was staring intently at him.
Um, okay, Lee said. He offered Dotty the chair he had been sitting in and Dotty took it.
Amanda didnt know why she didnt want Lee to go, she just didnt. She still had no clue what their relationship was, but he seemed comfortable around her family, and they were comfortable around him. Maybe, she thought, he was just a good family friend. She didnt know. Dotty was talking to Amanda. She didnt even hear her. She was in her own little world, staring at Lee. She was happy he was there. She smiled to herself. The last thing she saw before falling asleep was Lees handsome face smiling back at her.
*****************************************
Lee couldnt sleep. It was tearing him apart that Amanda didnt remember him. His wife didnt know him. He felt as if his whole world had been turned upside down in the last few days. It was three o clock in the morning and he was wide-awake. It hadnt really sunk in that Amanda didnt remember him, until he had been watching her sleep in the hospital that night. Dotty and the boys had left, and Lee stayed watching Amanda sleep. It suddenly hit him like a ton of bricks that she didnt remember him. He had felt like crying, which was something he never did. He left right at that moment. He couldnt even bear to look at her after that. Now that it had officially sunk in, he was hurt, sad, angry and feeling a lot of other emotions all at once. He kept telling himself that it wasnt her fault that she had amnesia. He knew it wasnt fair of him to be angry with her for this, but he couldnt help it. He loved her so much, and now that might all be taken away from him for good. He couldnt bear that thought. He was driving himself crazy. He sighed, he knew he had to try and get some sleep.

Mother, I have questions that I want answered, Amanda said firmly, sitting up in her hospital bed.
Sure dear, ask away, Dotty said sitting in the chair next to her daughters bed.
Who and where is my husband?
Husband? Youre not married, Dotty replied.
Then how come everyone keeps calling me Mrs. King? Amanda asked.
Because you kept your ex husbands last name, Dotty said.
So, I was married, but not anymore?
You and Joe divorced about 5 and a half years ago, Dotty said.
On good terms, or bad terms?
Good terms, you guys are still friends, and Joe still sees the boys when he can.
Joe King is his name? Amanda asked searching for some sort of recognition in her brain.
Yes, Dotty said.
Who is Lee Stetson? Amanda asked.
Hes your boyfriend dear, Dotty said.
Why didnt he just tell me that? Amanda asked more to herself than to her mother.
He probably just didnt want to give you too much information at once, Dotty said suspiciously, secretly wondering the same thing.
Look, Amanda, you need your rest. Enough questions for now.
Amanda was sick of hearing phrases like that, but agreed with her mother nonetheless. She knew no matter what, that she wouldnt win this one. She was lucky to get the answers that she had. They started to make sense. Now she knew why she felt the way she did about Lee. She still sensed there was something more, since Lee wouldnt tell her anything.

Lee was sitting on the couch in Billys office with a far away look in his eyes.
Lee, Billy said. No response.
Scarecrow, Billy said louder.
Hmm? Lee said, still with that far away look in his eyes.
Have you heard a single word Ive said? Billy asked.
Lee snapped back to reality. Um, well...
You look like hell, Billy said.
Thanks, Billy, Lee said sarcastically.
Lee, you need to get some rest. You wont be able to concentrate on The Mongoose case like this, Billy said. Billy was worried about his friend. It was obvious from the dark circles under his eyes that he wasnt sleeping. He was paler than usual and his hair was a bit of a mess. He looked like he did when he was playing the role of a burnt out agent, under cover, a few years ago.
Yeah, right, rest, Lee mumbled.
Look, Lee, off the record, I know this whole Amanda thing is really getting to you. I completely understand why. But for now, you need to let it go and get some rest, so we can find The Mongoose and put him back behind bars.
Let it go? I cant let this go Billy, Lee said in a raised voice as he stood up.
Scarecrow, calm down.
Calm down? Lee said in a voice that was on the verge of hysteria. Lee felt like he was going to lose it. All his pent up anger came out. How the hell do you expect me to calm down, Lee yelled, when my wife is lying in a hospital bed, unable to remember me, wanting answers to questions that I dont know how to answer right now. Lee didnt even realize what he had said. He ran his fingers through his hair and looked up to see Billy looking at him with a shocked expression. Suddenly he realized what he had said. He couldnt take it back, so he decided to just go with the truth. Yes, Billy, married. Amanda and I are married. No one knows except Amanda and I, and now you. Well, actually right now, its just you and I who know," Lee said.
When? Billy choked out.
February 13th. We have been married for eight months. We are keeping it a secret for the safety of our, I mean Amandas family, Lee ended.
Billy didnt quite know what to say. He didnt know whether to be hurt that he hadnt been told about this, or happy for his friend. I guess congratulations are in order, Billy said.
Congratulations? Yeah, right, I cant even tell Amanda she is my wife. If I did, would she even believe me?
Lee was tired, he knew he mustve been more tired, and more affected by this whole situation, to let it slip to Billy that he and Amanda were married. It actually felt good to be able to tell someone else.
Lee, Im sure shell pull through this. Shell remember everything.
Yeah, I hope so. Look Billy, Im going to take you up on that offer of getting rest. I just need to take the rest of the day off, get rest and pull myself together, Lee said.
You got it, Scarecrow, Billy said.

The next week went by in a flash. Amanda still wasnt remembering anything. She was home and had been for a few days. Lee had only called her once since she had been home. He hadnt even stopped by her house to see her once. She didnt know how to get in touch with him. The one time he did call, he told her he was really busy with work. Amanda really wanted to see him. This was her boyfriend for goodness sake. When he called, she told him that her mother had told her that he was her boyfriend. He hadnt said anything to that, and had made some excuse about getting off the phone right after that. She didnt know what was going on. Of course she knew how hard this whole situation had to be on him. It mustve been really hard on him that she didnt remember him. Maybe this was just his way of dealing with it.
Dotty sleepily came down stairs. I just got the boys up for school, She said.
Thank you Mother.
The boys came running down stairs and sat down at the table to eat the breakfast Amanda had made for them.
Mother, in all the confusion of this past week, I never asked anyone where, or if I work.
You work for a federal film company called International Federal Film, Dotty stated.
I do? Amanda asked in a surprised tone of voice.
Yes, dear. Oh, Lee works there too. That is how you met him.
Really? Amanda asked. Lee had never said anything about the two of them working together.
Do you know where International Federal Film is, mother?
No, I dont dear. Youve never taken me there.
Amanda looked at her mother strangely, but proceeded with her next question nonetheless. Is it listed in the phone book?
No, I dont think so, Dotty replied.
How am I ever going to find it? Why is it such a secret place? Amanda asked more to herself than to her family. She wanted to go in and get a feel for what she did. Maybe something there would jog her memory. Her thoughts were interrupted by Jamies voice.
Um, mom, Jamie said.
Yes, sweetheart?
"Well a long long time ago you stopped by International Federal Film to drop off some paper work, and I was in the car with you. I dont know if I can remember where it is, because it was such a long time ago, but maybe I can try. Maybe things will look familiar. I know its in Washington D.C., Jamie ended.
That would be great sweetheart. Ill take you fellas to school early this morning, all right?
All right, the boys said in unison as they finished their breakfast.
****************************************
After a lot of driving around and stopping at a few gas stations to see if anyone knew where IFF was, they had finally found it. Amanda ended up getting the boys to school a half an hour late. She was now back on her way to IFF. She pulled into the parking lot where Jamie had remembered waiting in the car, and looked around. She walked a little ways and found IFF. She walked in the door to see a woman sitting at a desk.
Mrs. King, the woman said in a surprised tone of voice.
Um, hi, Amanda said not knowing whether this woman knew her situation or not.
Its okay Mrs. King, I know, the woman said sensing Amandas discomfort.
Amanda nervously clasped her hands together. She knew her next question would sound strange to this woman who knew her, but she had said she knew Amandas situation, so hopefully she would understand. What floor does Lee Stetson work on?
Knowing the situation Amanda was in, Mrs. Marsten did not think the question that Amanda had asked was strange. She gave Amanda the directions she needed to get to the bullpen.
Thank you, Amanda said. She walked to the elevator and pushed the button. A few seconds later the elevator opened. There were clothes hanging in this elevator. It looked just like a closet. She thought it was strange and looked back at Mrs. Marsten with a quizzical look on her face. Mrs. Marsten just smiled and shrugged. Amanda stared at the elevator for a second more and then got in. When she got off the elevator, she looked around and then took Mrs. Marstens directions to the bullpen. She walked in and looked around. There were desks everywhere. Phones were ringing, there was a continuous beeping noise and computers were on some of the desks. The place looked nothing like a film company. Not that she knew what a film company was supposed to look like, but this just didnt seem to look like one in her opinion. She was starting to wonder if she was in the right place when she saw Lee through the window of a small office. She walked to the office and knocked on the door. Billy looked up, and when he saw it was Amanda, turned to look at Lee, who was already looking at him. Come in, Billy said.
Um, hi. I hope Im not interrupting anything.
No, youre not, Lee said, caught off guard that she was there. 'How did she find this place?' he thought. He continued speaking after a pause, What are you doing here? How did you find this place?
Oh, mother told me I worked here and that you did too. I wanted to come by and see if maybe being here would jog my memory, and I was just curious to see where I worked. Jamie sort of remembered where this place was, from the one time I had dropped some paper work off and he was in the car with me.
Lee didnt say anything. 'Man, that kids got a good memory,' Lee thought to himself about Jamie. Oh, Amanda this is Billy Melrose, our...boss.
Hello, Amanda said shaking his hand.
Hello Amanda, Billy said.
Just then Francine walked in the door. We think we have a lead on where the Mongoose is, hes still in D.C. and amazingly enough, was spotted at the warehouse where you and Amanda were being held... Francines words trailed off as she felt everyone staring at her intently. She looked up to see Amanda in the room.
Amanda, this is Francine Desmond, Lee said quickly.
Amanda smiled at Francine.
How are you feeling? Francine asked in a bittersweet voice.
Fine, Amanda replied. She didnt know why, but she instantly got a vibe she didnt like from this woman.
Amanda looked around again. For the second time, she thought that this place didnt look like a film company. It was also strange what Francine had been talking about when she had entered the room. She knew that The Mongoose had captured she and Lee, but people in a film company wouldnt be talking about leads on someone. Wouldnt they leave that to the police? Amanda voiced her thoughts. This place doesnt look like a film company. She wasnt oblivious to the strange look that passed between Lee, Billy and Francine at her mention of this. She thought that was strange. They acted as if they were hiding something.
Um...Amanda, we need to talk, Lee stammered. Lets go back to my apartment, Lee looked pleadingly at Billy.
Yes, go, Scarecrow, Billy said.
Lee figured it was time to tell Amanda the truth. He could tell she was already highly suspicious and would be asking questions anyway. He didnt want her to find out about this from anyone else but him. Not that anyone else knew, but he just didnt want to take that chance.
