Pilot, whose true name we have not yet learned, has a symbiotic relationship with the Leviathan ship, Moya. This is, as he put it, the only way for his race to travel among the stars. He has the ability to multitask, which is a highly prized skill, as Namtar wanted it very much. He is permanently in place on Moya, unable to leave his den and is in constant contact with her, seeing through her senses. He is not the original Pilot of Moya, being a replacement for the one who was actually chosen after the Peacekeepers killed her because the PKs wanted someone who would do as they wanted. Pilot naively went along with this, not realizing that another would have to die for him to achieve his dream of going to space, and has carried that guilt around for several cycles, buried deep within himself.

Life before Moya: He was living on his species' planet before being joined by the Peacekeepers, under Velorek's command, to Moya. He had been deemed too young by his people's Elders for the joining, which is why he had been denied it and why he was so willing to take the chance Velorek offered him.

Current whereabouts: He is still on Moya in the Uncharted Territories, though now he is undergoing the natural bonding process between his people and the Leviathans and therefore has lost much of his control of Moya's systems.
