 DRDs, or "Diagnostic Repair Drones" are part of the crew too, even if they aren't sentient, but just follow Moya & Pilot's orders. Basically these little guys are completely mechanical, as opposed to Moya only being partially so, and it's their job to make repairs to Moya's systems as well as defend her from harm. Even if the ones who Moya believes are harmful are her own crew, as the DRDs defended her against them when Moya became pregnant. These little guys take a licking--just look at the number who have been shot, fried, jettisoned into space, etc. in just over a cycle since Crichton arrived on Moya. They have lasers, little claws for grasping things, and apparently syringes full of translator microbes stored within their compact 1 1/2 foot long shell, with two little eye stalks to see, and little running lights around their base. |
