It was the best of times when Scandal'Us filed into a Sydney photographic studio on April 12 to pose for WHO WEEKLY's cover shoot. "That whole period was just amazing," recalls Simon Ditcham. Not only was the TV show that gave birth to the quintet rating its socks off, averaging 2.1 million viewers each Sunday night, but in turn Popstars fans became Scandal'Us fans. 140,000 of them buying their debut single, "Me Myself and I," which guaranteed the group an ARIA Award in October. Their manager, Les Gock, told WHO that he couldn't believe his luck at the selection of the "talented and fantastic" bunch, "I love them to pieces," he gushed.
But perhaps the R&B- inspired group's moniker was an omen after all. Gock and Scandal'Us parted ways in October, after they failed to take off in the UK, where they toured with UK Popstars winners Hear'Say in August. "There have been some down moments," agrees Ditcham. But he's proud that when the going got tough, the would-be famous five stuck it out. "We have a new manager and we are writing songs for a new album and hopefully we will tour," he says, adding that 2002 is "going to be an amazing year." |
