History of Name:

MC DERMOTT (Mac Diarmada)
: An important Connacht sept but the Monaghan family may be indigenous.  They may descend from a Dermot MacMahon or some other Dermot.  We do not know of any mass migration from the West.  In any event, Melaughlen McDermody claimed Tannagh on 16 April 1633.  The McDermotts are the 66th family with 24N, 9W, 13C and 19S.

The following information was provided to me by the Monaghan Ancestral Research Group (Ginealaigh Mhuineachain) while I was visting County Monaghan in search of McDermott ancestors (1991).

Locations of the McDermott Family in
Currin, County Monaghan parish in 1827 as listed in the Tithe Applotment Book.

McDermot, Bernard Jun.,                   located in Annies
McDermot, Bernard Sen.,                  located in Annies
McDermot, Michael                            located in Annies
McDermot, Owen                               located in Annies
McDermot, Owen Sen.                       located in Annies
McDermot, Patt                                  located in Annies
McDermott, Charles & Co.                 located in Corraskea
McDermott, John                                located in Corraskea

By 1860 the Griffith Valuations record McDermotts in the following townland locations in Currin parish.

McDermott, Bernard in Annies
McDermott, Bernard, Jun. In Annies
McDermott, Michael, in Annies
McDermott, Owen, Sen. In Annies

Please note the variant spellings McDermot/McDermott.  By 1860 the Corraskea and Tullyhumphry areas had no McDermott families leasing land.  All these townlands are on the Monaghan/Fermanagh border.

Map of County Monaghan, Ireland

The parish of Currin is in south-west Monaghan.  Annies, Corraskea, and Tullyhumphry are located on the Fermanagh (Northern Ireland) and Monaghan (Republic of Ireland) county lines.

While driving around looking for churches and cemeteries in 1991 (having one of the most delightly days of my life), I took this photo of one of the villages from which McDermotts emigrated (unfortunately I can't remember which of the three villages it is except that it is in the Currin Parish):
