| Mary Lynch O'Brien (1835-1921) |
| Mary (Lynch) OBrien Obituary Mary Lynch was born in Cork, Ireland, March 17, 1835, and died at the home of her daughter Mrs. John Doyle, May 29, 1921, thus reaching the age of 86 years, 3 months 12 days. She came to this country when about 12 years of age, settling in Boston, Mass. After which they moved to the town of New Diggings. In the year of 1852 she was united in marriage to Lawrence OBrien. In the year 1877 they moved to Kendalltown, where she made her home until the death of her husband May 28, 1904. To this union eleven children were born, four of her children dying in infancy. Her husband Lawrence OBrien, Patrick, Mary Diamond and Julia Burke having preceded her to the Betterland, some years ago. The surviving children, Mrs. John Doyle and Michael OBrien of Kendall, Mrs. Bridget McNearney of Benton, Wis., and Mrs. Wm. Fink of Cincinnati, Ohio; besides those of her children she is survived by thirty-six grandchildren and twenty-two great grand children, besides a host of neighbors and friends. Mrs. OBrien although having passed the ordinarily allotted members of the human race, will never-the-less be sadly missed not only by the relatives, but also by the many friends and neighbors to whom she endeared herself by her gentle affectionate character, and true Christian life. Through the many trials and disappointments which were no doubt her lot as one of the pioneer settlers of the country, she never faltered, but held firmly to the principles and doctrine of the Catholic church of which she was a faithful member. The last rites of the church administered to her by Rev. Father Morris. The funeral was held from the Immaculate Conception church after which the remains were conveyed to the Catholic cemetery in Kendall and placed beside those of her husband and children who preceded her to the Great Beyond. She was carried to her last resting place by six of her nephews*: Joseph and John OBrien, Patrick and James Diamond, Willian and John A. OBrien. * Although the obituary indicates Mary Lynch O'Brien's pallbearers were her nephews we believe they were more likely to have been her grandsons. |
| The death date and burial place of Mary Lynch O'Brien were mysteries for many years. No one in the family seemed to know just where she was buried. There was no grave marker in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery (Truman, Town of Kendall, Lafayette County, Wisconsin). Alas, Michael and Rita O'Brien (Michael is Mary Lynch O'Brien's great-grandson) were able to track down an obituary in August 2001. We now know that Mary Lynch O'Brien was buried next to her husband Lawrence O'Brien. Michael and Rita O'Brien have installed a grave marker for Mary Lynch O'Brien. Thank you Michael and Rita!!
