Remember Mike? The real survivor? He is the only kid at Camp Arawak who actually survives. He joined in with Kenny and Billy whilest making fun and folly of Angela, yet he seemed to escape her murderous wrath. Why? Was it done on purpose? Was he just plain overlooked as a victim? "My theory was that at some point Mike joined in on
some of the fun. That is why she never offed him even though he was worse to
her than some of the other people who bought the farm. Also explains why he
left Judy's room after Mel came in...hmmm. Given how rotten and cocky he was
(especially to Mel) do you think he would have left a make out session with
Judy to go back to his cabin. I don't think so.." These days Mike is still surviving, plucking away at theories, rubbing elbows with celebrities and penning his own 'Sleepaway Camp' sequel to send to Robert Hiltzik.
1) How did you get involved with 'Sleepaway Camp'.. Meeting Robert Hiltzik, audtioning.. the whole story ?
My agent sent me on the audition and I hit it off with Robert. He had
a very calm way about him, that made you feel at ease. He liked the fact
that I played Lacrosse and I think that he gave me the role based on that
alone.
2) What did you think about the script when you read it ?
I could tell from the script that this was going to be a lot of fun.
You get to go away from home, make more money than your friends that are
working at 7-11 and get to survive the bloodbath. All that, and a makeout
scene, I was excited!
3) Was there any inspiration for the character of Mike and.. Were there any similarities between you and Mike ?
Mike was a pretty cocky guy and I was totally the opposite, fairly shy,
especially around people I didn't know. I tried to portray him as a real
pain in the butt, at the same time I wanted him to come across as a likeable
guy. He was just there to have a good time with his friends (maybe kill a
person or two...ooops said too much..you have to wait for SC4). I ended up
having a good time making the movie (and killing a person or two....ooops,
there I go again) and making new friends. I guess that was the greatest
similarity between Mike and Tom.
4) What did your family and friends think of 'Sleepaway Camp' ?
Everyone was really excited for me and my friends used the fact that
they knew me to score with chicks. My family was proud, although my Mom told
me later that it really wasn't necessary for me to grab my privates during
the water balloon scene. I told her it was in the script!
5) How did you and the rest of the cast (your fellow teens) get along? Any fights or couplings ?
We all got along really well, and that is the complete truth. Paul
taught us excersises that you could do with a chair, Robert and his wife made
sure that we ate handfulls of Vitamin C tablets everyday, the crew took us to
see the Clash and looked out for us whenever guys would come around our motel
looking for their girlfriends. I just want to state for the record, that
none where ever up in my room. I think a few people tried to couple up, but
to the best of my knowledge no one succeeded.
6) Tell me about that scene in the Rec Hall where you and John Dunn's character, Kenny, are making fun of Angela. You three must have had fun doing that scene.. Who came up with that Frankenstein walk that you had to do ?
That scene was brutal. I am pretty sure Robert came up with the
Frankenstein walk since I had to keep my hands down, so they wouldn't block
Angela's face. I think it was a Zombie walk in the original script. John and
I ended up having the same stupid idea at the same time. We wanted to piss
the local extras off so that the fight scene would look real. We pissed them off
enough to have them beat us up pretty good. What you see on film is a close
to a real fight as you can get.
7) Your character, Mike, gave Angela as much hell as anyone else, yet he was the only survivor from Camp Arawak who got away with harrassing Angela. I always thought this was a GREAT oppurtunity for a future sequel since he was left alive. Why do you suppose Mike was NOT killed ?
I think that somewhere along the line he figured out that Angela was
behind the killings. Maybe she came to kill him and he made a deal with the
Devil, to help with the killings if she spares his life. Mike would be that
kind of guy. If that wasn't the case, I think that Angela would definitely
have killed him as well.
8) What was it like being on the set and filming 'Sleepaway Camp'.. How was it doing the scene where you had to kiss Judy, played by Karen Fields.. And the fight scene at the Rec Hall ?
It was a lot of fun. We all got along and had a great time. We even
hung out on the set when we weren't filming any of our scenes. I watched the
film again (first time in 10 years) over the weekend and that kissing scene
with Judy looked so weird. It was like speed kissing. I don't kiss anything
like that so I wonder what that was all about. Certainly didn't look even a
little bit passionate.
9) Was the whole Sleepaway Camp experience a positive one ?
Of course. It was a kewl project to be involved in, especially when
you are that age.
10) If you were asked to reprise your role as Mike, would you ?
Depends on the role and the script. If it was a quality movie intended
to be a mainstream hit, yeah I would do it again. I am a much better actor
now so it would be fun to see how Mike has grown up.
11) Have you seen the sequels (Sleepaway Camp 2 Unhappy Campers, Sleepaway Camp 3 Teenage Wasteland) ? If so, what did you think of them ?
I haven't seen them. I will stick them in my Netflix line and let you
know what I think.
12) Do you like horror movies.. Was it exciting to be in one ?
I really like Horror films, but I am a chicken shit (Judy called it!) so
I still close my eyes at some parts. My kids on the other hand don't even
flinch. It was just like making any other movie, except you had lots of
great gory stuff to play around with on the set.
13) What did you go on to do after Sleepaway Camp.. Acting related.. ?
TV stuff, regional theater and commercials. I mostly concentrated on
making music and was the front man for a band called Exit.
14) Tell me about your career at present time..
Lots of stuff in the bio, Carrie, grab whatever you feel is the most
interesting to your site fans.
15) What are some of your hobbies and/or ways of spending your free time when not working ?
I have four kids that take up most of my free time. We travel quite a
lot and they are involved in all kinds of sports from Hockey to Soccer. I am
a private pilot so I go flying quite a bit.
16) Sleepaway Camp is a favorite movie of a lot of people. What is YOUR favorite movie ?
Wow, it is really tough to pick just one. I liked Jaws alot, An
American Werewolf in London, True Believers, Silence of the Lambs, The Bond
Movies, The Pink Panther series (man was Peter Sellers funny), Dressed To
Kill, Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Terminator, Randsom, anything that Gene
Hackman does (he's one of our best actors), There's Something About Mary was
awesome....too many to name just one. But if I have to pick one, I guess I
would say Harold and Maude! Oh, I can't tell a lie, I only said that in case
Cameron Diaz ever visited the web site.
17) Do you have your own copy..? When was the last time you saw the movie ?
Just over the weekend. Before that, I probably watched it 10 years ago.
Yes, my wife went out an bought it a few years ago. It is in bad shape
though, so I am ordering the DVD.
18) Did you keep any memorabilia from the set.. and stay in contact with anyone from the movie ?
Believe it or not, I don't have a single thing left from the set. You
have to remember, that was before EBAY, if we had only known then......dohhhh!
19) Were you surpised to find out 'Sleepaway Camp' had a cult following.. What do you think of the whole revival like time it has become for 'Sleepaway Camp' ?
I really was surprised, but pleasantly so. I think that a solid sequel
could really work given all of the fans that are out there. I was shocked
that the fans are mostly young kids. I figured, if we had any, they'd be
middle aged farts like the rest of us.
20) Describe yourself in one word:
Happy.
