There is a piece of trivia that has always fascinated me about SLEEPAWAY CAMP. Although Karen Fields played the role of Judy, she was not the original choice. Actress Jane Krakowski, who I always knew as "Vicki" from National Lampoons Vacation was originally going to be "Judy".

According to Felissa Rose (Angela from the original Sleepaway Camp), Jane had some hesitations about doing the scene where Judy is killed. Apparently the scenes were twice as graphic in the original script and she felt uncomfortable. "She decided she didn't like the scene where she gets killed, that it was to graphic, so they had to recast it and Karen Fields got the part"

Also mentioned on the online edition of Maxim Magazine is a tidbit: "She was chosen to play a character in the early �80s slasher flick Sleepaway Camp, but turned it down because she felt the girl�s death was too violent."

Actress Karen Fields also had some problems with the intensity of that scene and it actually had to be toned down so she would feel comforable with it. There is a rumor surrounding the whole death by curling iron scene, that to avoid an X rating, the scene had to be cut. But I don't know if that is entirely true seeing as half the scene was not even filmed because it was already cut from the script to begin with. Says Felissa Rose: "Even Karen Fields had a little trouble I think, if I remember correctly, where she didn't really like how gruesome... because the way it's written in the original script, it was really graphic and really gruesome, so they changed it a bit and made it so she was comfortable with the scene."

If you look at both actresses side by side and are familiar with Jane's work, you very well know about the similarities between the two and you also know Jane would have acted circles around Karen when it came to the role of "Judy".
