Anchor Bay Atrocities
In 1999, Anchor Bay, formerly Video Treasures, announced they were to release Sleepaway Camp, not once, but thrice. Fans were treated to a DVD, a Widescreen Collectors Edition and a remastered standard full frame VHS. But from the very beginning of the announcement, the date of release was uncertain and always changed. Although rental chains like Blockbuster Video said it had been released, it was not available for rental. Finally internet retailers like Amazon and Reel were listing and selling all three formats. Even then, there were delays due to backorders. With all the anticipation, the setbacks and the waiting, it was finally being located and reviews surfaced, many from promotional DVD discs. The reviews were leaning more towards the negative side, especially for the commentary by writer/diretor Robert Hiltzik and actress Felissa Rose. Then the most horrid revelation was revealed... "Sleepaway Camp" had been released CUT.
What follows is a run down of altered/missing scenes:
MISSING IN ACTION
4.When the lifeguard find Kenny's corpse, the scene is badly cut and you only see half of the entire segment
To my suprise many fans either didn't notice, didn't care or had just not seen an original copy of the movie in years for them to notice the changes. To my amazement, Robert Hiltzik didn't even notice the changes to his movie while doing the commentary.. *?*
When Anchor Bay was confronted with the revelation they were very diplomatic in their responses:
(Addressed to me)

Perhaps the final word on the subject will give angered fans some peace of mind and the hopes that maybe one day the right people will release SLEEPAWAY CAMP in it's rightful state and we will see the original edition in all it's glory. Until that day, hold tight to your Media and Video Treasures editions of SLEEPAWAY CAMP. "...the version of SLEEPAWAY we currently have out is the only one we will be releasing. It was the only available version provided to us. We were sorry to discover it was not the uncut version, however it isn't currently possible to release anything else."
(April 20 2004) Line of passage found @ www.hometheaterforum.com (MichaelFelsher) All I can say is that currently we aren't able to release another version of the original SLEEPAWAY. But we hope you will be happy with the release of the sequels and the box set, we will do our best to make them top-notch releases. |
