Anchor Bay Atrocities
In 1999, Anchor Bay, formerly Video Treasures, announced they were to release Sleepaway Camp, not once, but thrice. Fans were treated to a DVD, a Widescreen Collectors Edition and a remastered standard full frame VHS. But from the very beginning of the announcement, the date of release was uncertain and always changed. Although rental chains like Blockbuster Video said it had been released, it was not available for rental. Finally internet retailers like Amazon and Reel were listing and selling all three formats. Even then, there were delays due to backorders. With all the anticipation, the setbacks and the waiting, it was finally being located and reviews surfaced, many from promotional DVD discs. The reviews were leaning more towards the negative side, especially for the commentary by writer/diretor Robert Hiltzik and actress Felissa Rose. Then the most horrid revelation was revealed... "Sleepaway Camp" had been released CUT.

What follows is a run down of altered/missing scenes:
1.During the mind over matter scene... Ricky counts to 3, Mozart sits up and says "You guys are gross", the audio then repeats itself and we hear another "3!" and another "You guys are gross!"
2.During the scene in the rec hall when Paul is talking to Angela, we hear the background song skip itself
3.The scene when Billy and his friends are running naked on the dock and then seen jumping into the water has been completely cut from the movie

MISSING IN ACTION

4.When the lifeguard find Kenny's corpse, the scene is badly cut and you only see half of the entire segment
5.After Angela is struck with the water balloon and Mel starts walking away, the scene showing the bullies standing by watching is cut completely
6.Unlike the fullframe, the scene where Angela finds Judy and Paul kissing in the woods is there in it's entirety however... The audio is completely f*cked up. We see Judy say "Same to you". But we don't hear her. Instead we hear the same music that played a second before
7.When Meg's corpse is discovered, Mel's dialogue "he did this!" is repeated a second time and so is the background music. The shot of Meg's body is cut in half
8.When Judy is curling her hair, the background music is repeated while switching scenes
NOTE: Although there are slight diffrenced between the standard vhs and the widescreen vhs, the alterations are basically the same.

To my suprise many fans either didn't notice, didn't care or had just not seen an original copy of the movie in years for them to notice the changes. To my amazement, Robert Hiltzik didn't even notice the changes to his movie while doing the commentary.. *?*

When Anchor Bay was confronted with the revelation they were very diplomatic in their responses:
(Addressed to Horror DVD's
"Just letting you (maybe you'll want to pass it on) that we are looking into the Sleepaway Camp situation. We are as confused as to what happened with this release as anyone, and although a repressing/recall may not be financially possible we will most likely offer an exchange for another product or something to that effect. Of course, an official announcement will be made once we have determined the reason behind the missing footage. Please let everyone know we are very sorry that many have been dissatisfied with the release, and at the very least we will determine the cause of the problem."

(Addressed to me)
"Well all we know is that the only existing elements for a DVD transfer were used by the licensor for our release, and unbeknownst to us it was missing some material. Unfortunately this is all the licensor has to offer us, so a re-issue of the title simply isn't possible at this time.

Perhaps the final word on the subject will give angered fans some peace of mind and the hopes that maybe one day the right people will release SLEEPAWAY CAMP in it's rightful state and we will see the original edition in all it's glory. Until that day, hold tight to your Media and Video Treasures editions of SLEEPAWAY CAMP.

"...the version of SLEEPAWAY we currently have out is the only one we will be releasing. It was the only available version provided to us. We were sorry to discover it was not the uncut version, however it isn't currently possible to release anything else."

(April 20 2004) Line of passage found @ www.hometheaterforum.com
(Joao_Bastos) ...Also: you need to re-release "Sleepaway Camp" UNCUT. Since you're planning to release a box set with all 3 movies, that's a great chance to include the uncut version, to make it the "ultimate" box set for the films.

(MichaelFelsher) All I can say is that currently we aren't able to release another version of the original SLEEPAWAY. But we hope you will be happy with the release of the sequels and the box set, we will do our best to make them top-notch releases.
