7th Grade Integrated Science Classroom of Excellence Disclosure Statement

Mr. Grunander

We view this class as a three-way partnership consisting of teachers, students, and parents.  A student cannot complete the requirements alone, a parent cannot support a child alone, and a teacher cannot facilitate learning alone.  Student success takes all parties working together to provide a quality education and to monitor the earning of grades and credit. It is our hope that all students will take advantage of the opportunities available to them throughout this school year.

Our greatest hope is that every student will take advantage of all opportunities made available to them this year.

To strive towards success, we have certain expectations of ourselves, our students and their parents.

Classroom of Excellence Common Requirements

Just as everyone learns differently, all teachers teach differently and have different definitions of what “Excellence” looks like.  The following is a list of requirements that we, as teachers, consider “Excellence.”  On the reverse side of this paper, you will find a list of individual teacher preferences and requirements.

1. No retakes on tests – there may be “Reflective Make-ups” (teacher discretion)

2. No late work – assignments need to be turned in on the due date.  If there is an unavoidable circumstance that will make it so your assignment cannot be turned in on time, you must complete the following steps: A) Talk to your teacher about the circumstance, B) coordinate with your teacher the use of your “Oops Pass” (you get only one per quarter), C) turn the assignment in the next day with your “Oops Pass.”

2. Tardies will be minus participation points (amount determined by teacher).

3. All papers will be labeled with the following heading in the upper right hand corner of the paper: First and Last Name, Date, Class Period, and Name of Assignment. Point deductions will be determined by teacher.

4. Planners will be checked randomly twice a month for the following: no mutilation and daily usage. Points will be determined by teacher.

5. Hall Passes will not be given unless the student presents his or her planner to the teacher with the hall pass portion completely filled out.

6. Quality work must be turned in.  Quality work means that assignments are neatly written on standard sized paper, clean and free of stray marks or doodles, no spiral edges, and no dirty or wrinkled papers. Point deductions will be determined by teacher.

TEXT:  We will be using classroom sets of 2-3 different books.  They can be checked out.

COURSE OBJECTIVE: To help each student value and use science as a process of obtaining knowledge and how science enhances our understanding of the world that we live in.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a one-semester class.   See State Core Curriculum online at http://www.schools.utah.gov/curr/sci/secondary/default.htm

GRADING:  Grading will be based on several items: Tests/Assessments, Assignments, Activities/Labs, Homework and Participation.  Final grades will be weighed in categories: Tests/Assessments will be 30%, Assignments will be 30%, Activities/Labs will be 25%, and Participation will be 15%.

EXTRA CREDIT:  Extra credit projects cannot raise a student’s grade more than 4% AND CAN ONLY HELP A STUDENT’S GRADE, despite what you think PowerSchool tells you.

Approved activities throughout the year:

1-       Read a non-fiction, credible science book and write a book report about it.

2 -   Arrange for a guest speaker to talk to the biology classes

- It MUST be a credible speaker and arranged with Mr. Grunander beforehand

CITIZENSHIP:  The citizenship grade will be based on participation, preparedness, punctuality, class behavior and individual effort.  Failure to do your best in any of these will result in a lower citizenship grade.

HALL PASS USE: Students will only be to use hall passes when an emergency arises AND they have their planner with them.  Students will NOT be allowed to go back to their lockers to get items they forgot to bring to class.

THREE STRIKES YOU’RE OUT: Should the teacher have to call a students name three times during one class period for disciplinary action, the student will have to come up with a behavior-altering plan and the following discipline plan will go into effect.

DISCIPLINE PLAN:   Follows the “Three Strike” policy.

                1st Offense --- Behavior Plan

2nd Offense --- Behavior Plan signed by parent

3rd Offense --- Behavior Plan signed by parent and teacher contact with parent

4th Offense --- Behavior Plan signed by parent and contact administration

                5th Offense --- Referral

In extreme cases such as: violence, blatant safety violations, refusal to follow directions, etc., immediate referral to the office will be made.

LAB WORK: Students will be expected to do lab work.  A lab safety disclosure will be sent home.  Failure to obey lab rules will result in an immediate zero for the lab with no make-up allowed.  Extreme disobedience to the rules will result in a referral or recommendation for suspension.
