Environmental Service Leadership Project

"I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know. The only ones among you who will be truly happy are those who have sought and found how to serve."

~Albert Schweitzer

“It's easy to make a buck.  It's a lot tougher to make a difference.”

 ~Tom Brokaw

“Suburbia is where the developer bulldozes out the trees, then names the streets after them.”

~Bill Vaughn

“We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us.  When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.”

~Aldo Leopold, A Sand County Almanac

You are to spend at least 2 hours in your community helping out the environment. I make that statement a little vague so you can have some flexibility.  Just remember the key word in this project is SERVICE.  That means it can’t be part of your chores. It must be something you don’t have to do - that’s what service is.  Go clean up a field or a road, call the BLM or your city and see what you can do, ask a church or service group if they have anything going on, rid an elderly person’s backyard of invasive plants (weeds), etc.  Have fun, do it with a friend if you’d like – just make sure you’re serving.

Once you’ve done it, you need to answer two questions with some THOUGHT!

  1. Discuss the need/influence of open space in an urban setting.
  2. How did your project improve the quality of life for humans and/or other animals?

On the same paper as your description, you need the signature of an adult who watched or supervised you while you did your project. If you have Stucki, he’s going to read them as well and grade them.
