Murasaki on Toshiya

One of my favorite bassist of jrock bands.

I'm always attracted to bands that have a strong bassist and often turn up the bass level to listen to the bass lines. Songs with a good bass line are more 'durable' to listen to, if you know what I mean. They are the intrinsic quality of a song. Some songs may have a good guitar solo or a catchy vocal tune but it's the BASS LINE that carries the mood of the music all along. It's very easy for one to grow tired of a songs with dull & repetitive bass lines.

Toshiya' skill on bass is good. Anyone not believing can listen to the bass solo in "Akuro no oka" & "Cage". He can play real fast with fingers moving like spider leds. His bass lines are quite different from Tetsu of L'Arc~en~Ciel, another one of my fav bassist. While Tetsu's bass lines are often melodious and acts almost like a guitar --only with a lower pitch^^, Toshiya's bass lines are more on the rhythmic side. Although Toshiya's bass line is not always the one responsible for conveying the melodies, he plays an important role in producing amazing underlying rhythm for the songs of Dir en grey. He obviously has a good rhythmic sense. That's why the songs of Dir en grey always have such good bass lines to them, good examples for it are: Yokan, I'll & Raison Detre.
