Murasaki on Kyo
Kyo writes all the lyrics of Dir en grey. He writes on all sorts of topics. When I said all, I meant ALL: from lyrics about love and longing, nostalgic memories, to hinting a rape scene, or a homicidal maniac's confession, S&M, life & death, suicidal mentality, all the way to portraying the mind of the embryo being aborted (scary, isn't it? but I think it's really well written~suitable for the anti-abortion campaign ^^).
Kyo said he writes his lyrics in his home that is completely dark except for a red light shining from the bathroom ~maybe that accounts for the utter weird atmosphere he is so good at creating by the use of his lyrics--or, rather, poems. Yes, I would definitely consider many of Kyo's work of lyrics as poems. Though the subject of the song maybe an explicit content (^^very oftenly so) the wordings are seldom explicit. He portrays the picture with abstract vocabularies that would guide your mind just enough to touch the edge of the subject, and then leave it to your mind to explore. That's why his lyrics are so...erm..., fragmented, shall I say? Many people have problems understanding just what the hell Kyo is getting at because they expect the lyrics to be plainly and painfully down to the point like normal lyrics are, but if you look at it from an angle of poetry, not expecting to be told everything down to the core, you can then appreciate the beauty of his abstraction and the way it inspires your mind to portray your own imagery of the piece of music.
One more thing that increases my liking for Kyo's work is that, though his lyrics are full of human emotions of various kinds, it never was written in an ooy-gooy-ticky-typical-whiny-love-song kind of way, i.e. overly melodramatic and pretentious. His songs are sad, but in a poetic way, about human weaknesses and compassions, not some 'heart-broken' little love-sicks whining about his 'miseries'. (^^ Am I being too sarcastic here? *blushes*)
Added to that, Kyo has a very good voice. It is deep and low instead of the usual high-pitched vocals that jrock bands tends to have. His voice is really expressive and creats a wonderful mood to suit the music. He can scream, howl, groan and laugh in a pure malicious way that makes your spine tickle... The vocal is a very important part in determining whether people'd like the band or not. With a bad vocal, even if people appreciates the band's music they cannot relate to the band as a whole. After all the vocal is the most dominant part that catches your ear when you listen to a song. If you dunno what I mean please listen to Mazohyst of Decadence. His desperate cries of the embroy being aborted is so heart-wrenching... His voice maybe the best BGM for a horror movie ne. ^^
