Program Information (Section 2 of 6)

Program Title: LatkePalooza

Program Summary - Please give a 1-2 sentence description of your program. This summary will be shown when people are browsing or searching for programs.

This Hanukkah celebration took place in the residence halls a few days before Hanukkah.  We made several different types of latkes (regular, sweet potato, veggie, and apple) and then sampled them!

Program Description - Please describe your program in detail. You will have an opportunity later to describe the planning process of the program in detail. Please limit yourself to a description of the program itself here.

We set up our cooking/party area in a dining hall in one of the quads on campus.  I began to prepare the cooking ingredients before any students showed up and as people arrived they helped prepare ingredients, fry latkes, schmoozed and ate.  The room also had music, decorations, sufganyot (jelly doughnuts), gelt, drinks, Hanukkah kits, edible dreidel-making, and upcoming program/Hillel info.  The day after the program, I used all of the leftover latkes at a Latke Tast Test at a table in the Student Union.

When was this program implemented? (Use the first time if it ran more than once or was part of a series.)

December 2001

What were the goals of the program (what did you hope to accomplish)?

- To bring Jewish life to the residence halls where students might not seek out Hillel on their own.

- To celebrate Hanukkah in a fun, unusual and non-traditional way.

Did you meet your goals? Why or why not?

I met my goals in that the program was fun and the latke-making went pretty smoothly (except for a small incident involving grating carrots & my finger!), but the attendance was pretty low.  This can be attributed to the location being in a low-traffic area unfortunately and other holiday celebration programs taking place on campus simultaneously.

Please describe the planning process for this program, step by step.

I reserved the room for the party in the dorm cafeteria a few weeks before the program and looked up latke recipes online.  You can search for them using the internet, or here are a few suggestions - http://www.cyber-kitchen.com/rfcj/category.cgi?category=HANUKKAH.  The day before the event, I purchased two electric skillets at Target to cook the latkes in, and all of the groceries at the supermarket.  The day of the event I collected all of the things for the program, loaded up my car, and set up camp in the area we were provided in the cafeteria seating area.

Materials/resources needed - As a guide for whomever might replicate this program, please describe all the materials/resources that you needed to create this program. Use the following as a guide: food, copies, paper / office supplies, decorations, telephone / e-mail / web, lighting, stage, audio / visual equipment, people (for posting flyers, sitting at tables, ...) etc.

FOOD: We had our kosher cafeteria make up lots and lots of latke mix but you can make it from scratch using this recipe (http://www.allsands.com/Food/Recipes/potatolatkesre_rdk_gn.htm).  I purchased vegetable oil, sweet potatoes, apples, lemon juice, parsley, carrots, zucchini, sour cream & applesauce from the supermarket.  In addition to latkes we had chocolate gelt and sufganyot (jelly doughnuts).

COPIES: We used the on-campus print shop to make flyers for the event.

PAPER SUPPLIES: Plates, forks, knives, napkins, paper towels (LOTS), as well as real knives, graters, spoons, bowls and spatulas.

DECORATIONS: menorahs & candles, gelt, dreidels, confetti, stuff to make edible dreidels (kosher marshmallows, red vines, Hershey’s kisses, icing to draw letters)

PEOPLE: I (JCSC Fellow) set up the program myself and students who came helped prepare cooking ingredients, fry up latkes, and eat latkes.  A freshman student helped clean up.

How did you publicize or advertise your program?

Where did the program take place? University building or other on campus location

How was the Jewish content presented and what media were used?

The event was a holiday celebration and focused around latke-making (a cultural Hanukkah celebration).  We put a fun spin on it by making other variations of the traditional potato latke – sweet potato, apple and veggie.

Program Follow-Up (Section 6 of 6)

What are your suggestions for someone who plans a similar program in the future? Why was or wasn't this program a success?

The event requires lots and lots of set-up and clean-up time and having several students to help with each would definitely be helpful.  Additionally, the event location was good but not very high-traffic.  It would have been great if we had it in another location where we would catch more people walking by on their way to eat dinner in the cafeteria.

What impact did the program have? How were students Jewishly enriched and what did they specifically learn?

The students had fun celebrating Hanukkah and meeting new Jewish students on campus.

If you have any comments about how we can improve this form and or process, please enter them here:

Make it a downloadable form that can then be emailed to be submitted.  It was very time-consuming to have to copy and paste each question into a word document, both so the information online would not be lost and so I could keep a copy for my records.

Roughly how long did it take for you to fill out this form?

Over 45 minutes
