Program Information (Section 2 of 6)
Program Title: UJC Campus Campaign Silent Auction
Program Summary - Please give a 1-2 sentence description of your program. This summary will be shown when people are browsing or searching for programs.
The UJC Campus Campaign held its annual auction to raise money for the United Jewish Communities by auctioning off items donated by local businesses.
Program Description - Please describe your program in detail. You will have an opportunity later to describe the planning process of the program in detail. Please limit yourself to a description of the program itself here.
This program consisted of a silent auction of many items/services donated by local businesses and individuals associated with Hillel and the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity (co-sponsors). The items were collected ahead of time and laid out on tables so that people could make bids, while eating kosher hors d’oeuvres and listening to music. The MC encouraged people to bid and reminded them that all proceeds (100% of the money collected) would be going to UJC. At the end of the bidding time, the highest bidder paid the cashier for their item before taking it home.
When was this program implemented? (Use the first time if it ran more than once or was part of a series.)
January 2002
- To raise money for UJC’s Tikkun Olam and community improvement efforts.
- To foster leadership development among student leaders in the UJC Campus Campaign.
- For students to have fun while contributing money to a good cause.
The event was fun and raised money… but not all that much. However, there is not much you can do about that because students do not have much money to begin with.

Please describe the planning process for this program, step by step.
In November (two months prior to the event), the UJC Campus Campaign met to discuss how we would acquire the items to be auctioned off. We formed a list of local businesses to approach and divided the list among the students. We also gained co-sponsorship with a campus fraternity that has high Jewish membership and discussed how they would contribute to the event. They would help get the word out to their members as well as have several of their brothers help staff the event. In the weeks before the event, I kept track of the donated items and arranged how they would be set up. Set-up took a couple hours because the food had to be delivered, the AV equipment had to be set up and the tables had to be arranged with decorations, all of the donations, and their bid sheets.

Program Follow-Up (Section 6 of 6)
What are your suggestions for someone who plans a similar program in the future? Why was or wasn't this program a success?
Lots of planning ahead of time (several months) is required to solicit donations from local businesses and individuals. It is very helpful if you have a large committee to assist in this. It was also good to co-sponsor this event with another campus organization to increase attendance and get the word out to the public.
What impact did the program have? How were students Jewishly enriched and what did they specifically learn?
Student learned about the organization United Jewish Communities, donated money by bidding on items, and had lots of fun!

Make it a downloadable form that can then be emailed to be submitted. It was very time-consuming to have to copy and paste each question into a word document, both so the information online would not be lost and so I could keep a copy for my records.
