My Immortal

"We will be together forever... I promise you, Sabine. I'll come back for you," Kevin whispered, cupping his lover's cheek softly. He took in everything about her; from the glow of her golden locks to her deep blue eyes, which were brimming with tears as he spoke.

"But I do not want you to go, Kevin. I have a bad feeling about this. I am afraid I will never see you again," Sabine whispered, placing her hand on top of his. Looking up into his emerald eyes, she knew he would try to come back to her. She didn't know the outcome if they were not allowed to be together.

"Do not be afraid, my love. Once the war is over, we shall get married and start the life we are destined to have." Kevin leaned down and softly kissed Sabine. She wrapped her arms around his strong neck, pulling him close to her. When they finally pulled apart, he rested a hand above her heart and placed hers over his. "You will be here in my heart until the end of time and beyond, Sabine. I love you so much. There would be no reason why we will not be together forever."

"I love you too, and you shall always be in my heart," Sabine whispered as the ships horn blared loudly. More tears streamed down her cheeks as she realized it was time for him to go. "Will you write me?"

"Every chance I get. We will be together soon, I know we will." Kevin kissed Sabine again, pulling something off his right ring finger. "Wear this ring until I get back. It will be for good luck." He took her hand and placed it on her left ring finger.

"But this was your Da's--"

"And now I want you to wear it. Please, Sabine."

"Only until you return," Sabine repeated, wiping away her tears.

Kevin nodded as he pulled her into a gentle hug. As the horn blared again, he placed a hand on her stomach. "Take care of yourself and the wee one, aye?"

"I will. T'aim n'gra leat (I love you), Kevin."

"T'aim n'gra leat (I love you), Sabine." They kissed one last time and he pulled away, running onto the large battleship, heading for Scotland. They waved until neither could be seen, neither knowing it would be the last time. Kevin wrote many times while in Scotland until one night there was an ambush and every man was killed.

Once Sabine recieved the news, her spirit was crushed. She ran to the cliff where she and Kevin had made love which created the life inside her; ready to end it all so she could be with her soulmate. But she remembered the promise they both made, and just sat on the edge, sobbing for hours.

A few months later she bore a son. Kevin Scott Killian. He looked exactly like his father with the raven locks and deep emerald eyes that matched the rolling hills of Ireland. Sabine watched him grow up and start a family of his own. The kind she and Kevin never were able to have together before he left for war. Once Kevin got the news his mother was sick, he rushed to their old home and found her near death.

"Ma! Ma, it is Kevin. Can you hear me?" Kevin called, sitting down at the side of the bed, taking her fragile hand into his. Sabine's tired eyes fluttered open.

"Kevin... oh, me wee boy. You m-made it--" She coughed long and hard as Kevin poured her a small glass of water. "I was hoping to see you before I go."

"What do you mean, 'before I go'? Ma, you are going to be just fine--"

"I am dying, Kevin."

"D-Dying? But why? How?" Tears came to his eyes as he looked at his dying mother. It scared him how pale she was, and how the gleam had faded from her blue eyes.

"It is just my time, boyo. God has decided to finally let me rest after all these years. I have watched you grow up to be a strong man just like your Da, with a wife and wee ones of your own. I am so proud of you, Kevin," she whispered, getting weaker by the moment.

"But Ma, I do not want you to leave. Not yet. Please..." he begged softly, kissing her hand. Tears streamed down his cheeks as she reached up with her other hand and brushed them away.

"It is okay. I will be safe up in Heaven with God and your Da. We will all be watching over you, Kevin. I already know you will continue to grow as a great husband, father and man. I love you, my son." Sabine pulled him down and kissed his forehead before falling back onto the pillow.

"Ma? No... Ma, no!" Kevin shook her gently, but got no response. He buried his head in her chest, sobbing loudly.

~*~*~

'Where am I?' Sabine thought as she woke up to find herself on a bright green hill. Looking around, she soon discovered she was at the same place where she had met Kevin back when they were teenagers.

"SABINE!" A voice called from behind her. Turning towards the voice, she gasped when she saw it was Kevin, and he was alive.

"KEVIN!" They ran towards each other and met in a loving embrace. Sabine started to cry as Kevin repeatedly kissed the top of her head. "You are alive!"

"Well, not exactly. Sabine... Darling, we are in Heaven."

"Heaven? You mean I have passed on?" she asked as memories of talking to her son for the last time flashed before her eyes.

"Aye, you have. I watched you and Kevin talk until the end... Sabine, you raised him perfectly. I am so glad you did not jump off the cliff when you heard I had died in battle," Kevin replied, running a hand through Sabine's golden locks, just like he used to.

"I could not kill myself. I remembered the promise we made and I kept it. But now... we are together. Aye?"

"Aye. Forever, just like I promised. We shall watch over our son and his fmaily until it is time for us all to be together again."

"Just like you watching over myself and Kevin all these years?" Sabine asked as Kevin kissed her again.

"Exactly, Dote. T'aim n'gra leat. (I love you)"

"T'aim n'gra leat. (I love you.)"
