802. Elizabeth Curtis (Curtice)

James Sr. and Elizabeth Curtis were not married, and he denied being the

father.

She and her father sued him in court, but he won and was awarded court

costs.

Despite that fact, James Jr. kept the Calkins name, and historians and

genealogists have acc e pted him as a Calkins descendant. James Sr. later

attended Yale Univ. and became a minister .

� Samuel Cirtiss of Hebron acknowledged himself bound ... that Elizabeth

Curtiss, his daught e r, shall appear att the Sessions of the Court in

Novemr next and prosecute her Complaint Ag ai nst James Calkins of

Lebanon for begetting her with child by fornication.

� In the summer of 1948, Mrs. Albert Hunt Chase, of Norwich, came across

this item which s h e very kindly sent to me: Hebron V. 1 - 13: Elizabeth

Curtis had a son James, b. 11 Mar. 17 32 .

7 Feb. 1732-3 Samuel Gilbert, Jr. married this Elizabeth Curtis.

With this possible clue, the Court records were searched with this

result: #151 Session of A p ril 1732. Samuel Curtis, of Hebron

acknowledged himslef bound in a Recognizance of 20� mon e y to the

Treasurer of the County of Hartford that his daughter Eliza Curtiss shall

prosecu t e her Complaint against James Calkins of Lebanon for begetting

her with child in fornicati o n att eh Adjourment of this Court in June

next.

#215; Session of November 1732. Elizabeth Curtiss of Hebron single-woman

Exhibited an Inform a tion to this Court against James Calkins of

Lebanon, therein Accusing him the sd Calkins wi t h begetting her with

Child on or about the 25th. Day of June Anno 1731 and that he is the F at

her of the Bastard Child born of her body on the 11th, Day of March 1732

and praying tha t th e said Calkins might be had before this Court to

Answer for the same &ca as pr the Infor matio n of file Appears,

Whereupon the sd. James Calkins was Arrested and Brott before this C ourt

a nd to the charge in sd Information pleaded not guilty **** the Court is

of the opinio n that t he said James Calkins is not the Father of the sd

Elizabeth Curtiss her Bastard Chil d born a s aforesd, and there upon

have Considered that the sd James Calkins shall Recover o f the Info rmer

the said Elizabeth Curtiss, his Cost Allowed to be 11s. 8d.

This is most certainly the James Calkins who married Mercy Mann. We have

here the right ag e , the right locality, the proved connection between

this child and Samuel Gilbert, Jr. Jam e s Calkins stated that he

belonged to the Church of England and a daughter of Samuel Gilber t , Jr

married Samuel Peters rector of St. Peter's Episcopal Church at Hebron.

The James Calkins involved as the alleged father of this boy was James,

b. Lebanon 29 Apr. 1 7 02, son of John & Abigail (Birchard) Calkins who

15 Apr. 1734 married Abigail Huntington.

Elizabeth Curtiss was a sister of the Caleb Curtis who married Jemima

Calkins, daughter of S a muel & Hannah (Gifford) Calkins.p 72
