William Curtis died 21 Dec. 1702 at Stratford; his second wife died in 1701.
William R. Cutter's New England Families (1913) has William as son of William rather than John Curtis. The description continues: He came to Stratford with his mother and brother John, and his name appears among
the list of Property owners in 1650. He was an original proprietor and was a most prominent man. As early as 1650 he had atained the rank of sergeant and represented Stratford in the general court almost continuously from 1667 to 1686. May 9, 1672, liberty was granted by the general court to him and his associates to begin a plantation at Pomeraug (Woodbury), and he was one of the original grantees. In June, 1672, he was appointed captain of the train band of Stratford and at the same time the general court declared him the second military officer of Fairfield county. In August, 1672, he was appointed one of six commissioners, together with the governor, deputy- governor and
assistants, as a war council against the Dutch at New York "to act as the Grand Committee of the Colony in establishing and commissionating Military Officers - and to manage, order and dispose of the Militia of the Colony in the best way and manner they can for our defense and safety." In October , 1675, during King Philip's war, he was appointed to command those forces raised in Fairfield county, with power to appoint his own inferior officers. In 1676 he was a commissioner of both Stratford and Woodbury. In may, 1676, he was chosen an assistant or member of the governors' council. He died in Stratford, December 21, 1702; his wife in 1701. His will was entered for probate, December 31,

...planter, York, proprietor, grand jury man in 1649; took oath of

allegiance to Mass. gov t . 22 Nov. 1652; signed the petition to Mass.

govt. in 1654 and that to Cromwell in 1657. So l d land to Henry

Lamprill, cooper, 18 March, 1683-4.

"Thomas Curtis, (brother of Richard), was in Scituate 1649. He had

previously lived at Georg i ana, and is called of York, in our records.

He returned to York, where he was living in 168 4 , at which date he gave

a deed to his son Samuel, of lands on Curtis or Buttonwood hill, wh er e

Samuel and several generations of his family lived.

"Two children of Thomas Curtis were born and baptized in Scituate second

parish, Elizabeth 1 6 49, and Samuel 1659. He had also a son Benjamin of

Portsmouth. We have seen a deed (preserv e d here) from Robert Tufton

Mason to Benjamin Curtis, conveying a lot of land 'on Great Isla n d in

the Piscataqua River,' dated 1681."

Dodivah and Job, daus. Ab i gail, Lydia, Sarah, Rebecca and Anne Curtis

and Hannah Jynkins; had already given portion s t o sons Benjamin and

Samuel C. "in a farm at Scituate."

Individual:

Immigrated to Scituate in 1638, then moved to York, Maine, 1642, with his

brother-in-law, Ri c hard Banks, ancestor of author Charles Banks.

Banks says that Thomas held no public office until 1668 when he was

elected selectman. He w a s elected again inm 1674, 1675, 1683, 1684. He

was killed in "the massacre." I am assumin g th at this is the York

massacre during Queen Anne's War. Will check with other sources.

Born in Kent, England, settled in Scituate, MA about 1643.

Richard Curtis, immigrant ancestor, was born in Kent, England. He settled

in Scituate, Massa c husetts, about 1643, and died there in 1693. Some

writers have confused this Richard with R ic hard Curtis, of Dorchester

and Milton; and with Richard Curtis, of Salem and Marblehead. R ich ard,

of Scituate, was on the list of Plymouth colony men able to bear arms in

that 1643 , an d was a town officer in 1650. His brother William as also

on this list, and together the y too k the oath of fidelity. He was one

of the 'allowed and approved inhabitants' to whom po rtion s of the

common lands were assigned by the joint committee of the general court in

1673 . Rich ard Curtis and Thomas Hyland were witnesses to the will of

General James Cudworth in 1 682. Hi s home was between that of Gowen

White and the harbor below Millbrook."

His will, dated 1692, gives 'To oldest son John two thirds ofmy real

estate, he providing f o r my wife Lydia during her life. To son Thomsas

one third, &c. To daughters Hannah Curtis , El izabeth Brooks, Mary

Badcocke, and Martha Clark.'"
