Athena was donated to the Ohio Bird Sanctuary in 1999 by the World Bird Sanctuary. She was a product of a breeding program designed to restock the Barn owl population in Ohio. The project was abandoned in 1988 because of the lack of suitable habitat for the Barn Owl.
