Hey SBAC,
Pay Enough Teachers Enough -
Not Too Many Administrators Too Much!!
School board priorities
By Jim Owens Thursday, October 4, 2001
http://www.gainesvillesun.com/EDITS/articles/2001-10-05speakowens.shtml
Only 56 cents of every education dollar in Florida actually makes it to the
classroom. The Legislature has mandated more classroom spending, but the recent
"reorganization" effort here in Alachua County was a mere juggling of books.
Positions were merely renamed and addresses were changed, but class-sizes were
reduced only on paper. Some of those renamed positions, moreover, came with
substantial raises in a year when all salaries were supposedly frozen.
Response By James L. Scaggs - Ignore the issue that SBAC needs
to
pay teachers enough and not too many administrators too much!!

School Board cuts 6 administration

The moves were made to help streamline the district's organization after a recent
management study labeled the district top-heavy with administrators.
But School Board member Barbara Sharpe countered that the district appeared
to be "bloated" with administrators.
Parents identify values

Parents listed visibility, honesty, character, accessibility and integrity as
some valued traits. They also said they did not want an administrator ... because
there was nowhere else for that person to go.
Sun Letter: School board

to blame for overstaffing Thursday, May 24, 2001

To the contrary, there is only one source to blame for the top-heavy staffing
at Kirby-Smith, and that is the five elected school board members. School superintendents
in Florida can only propose administrative positions.
School
administrators may be cut back

More than $1 million spent on Alachua County school administrative salaries
may be slashed and spent on teachers to meet the requirements of a new state
law designed to put money back into the classroom. And some School Board members
say that could be just what the district needs...

First, let me say that the money is available to meet and exceed all of the
wishes of ACEA, none of which are unreasonable. Board members, however,
would need to recognize the difference between the chafe and the grain, and
quit spending money on chafe.

SPEAKING OUT: By SANDE CALKINS December 4, 2000

The superintendent and the board want to use these funds to pay for a number
of employees'
raises of $6,000 to over $10,000, while other employees would receive as little
as $56.
It is just not fair to use the hard-earned raise money of many to fund the
outrageously high raises of a few.

Four percent pay raise proposed

An agreement on the proposal may take weeks. The most recent

half of whom
do not earn a "minimum market" salary, which amounts to the least they could
