Sam and Evie - Part 1
Sam turned over, sighed and threw off her covers completely. Glancing at her bedside table she saw it was already nearly midnight. She sighed and sat up. She couldnt sleep. It was just too hot and her mind was whirling with thoughts and ideas. Glancing at the time again she made a quick decision. Shed take a walk down the road to that corner shop and get some cookies. The fresh air would cool her down and the walk might help clear her mind.

She quickly threw on some clothes and grabbed her bag, locking the door behind her. Sam smiled, letting the cool night air rush over her face. She definitely needed to get out more. When was the last time she took a walk?! She thought with a sigh. Oh well, The guys and Janet and Cassie were all coming over tomorrow, which would be something enjoyable.

Fifteen minutes later she was walking out of the shop munching on a bag of cookies when her cell-phone rang. She continued to walk, crossing a road as she transferred the bag of cookies to the other hand she took her cell-phone from her waist. Wondering who would call her so late she looked at the display and smiled when she saw it said Jack. She was just about to answer it when she heard an incredibly loud car horn. She turned just in time to see car headlights blinding her. Adrenaline surged through her system in a split second and she made a futile attempt to dive left and avoid it. The car didnt hit her head on but sent her flying over the bonnet. She lay, unmoving, in the ditch by the side of the road, her phone crushed by the car wheel. The driver screeched to a halt, but paused only for a few seconds before screeching off again.

***************************************************************************

Jack took the phone from his ear and frowned at it. Hed just rung Sam to check she wasnt still on base, (but if she was to ask what he should bring) and been disconnected. Sam wouldnt do that, unless she had known he would ask, even though shed told him nothing 3 times before and this was her way of telling him not to bring anything. He grinned and shoved the phone back into its holder. She knew him so well. He smiled as he replaced the receiver and switched out the lights.

***************************************************************************

As Sam returned to consciousness, she groaned and rolled over. Opening her eyes she saw the night sky above her. She momentarily thought this was strange but her aching body screamed for attention.. She felt like a ton of bricks had dropped on her and now she ached all over. She pushing herself up into a sitting position and looked around, taking in her surroundings. She was in a ditch by the side of a road, her rucksack hanging loosely by one strap to her shoulder.
Its the middle of the night, what the hell am I doing here? She thought to herself, trying to climb to her feet. I have to get back to where? Where did she have to go? In fact, how did she get here in the first place? She sat back down, suddenly.  Who am I? Whats my name? She searched her mind and a new wave of panic swept over her. She couldnt remember!
Okay, okay calm down. What did she remember? She knew how to walk, how to talk and how to ride a bicycle or drive a car. She knew the sky was blue and that grass was green. She knew everything about life, but nothing of who she was.
She knew that her entire body was sore. There wasnt a part of her body that didnt ache, or a muscle that hadnt been strained. She was hungry, thirsty, scared and exhausted. Not to mention being bruised, scratched and torn all over. But deciding that sitting in a ditch by the side of the road wasnt the best place to be, she forced herself to stand up. Ignoring every muscle in her body that screamed at her to stop and instead just lay there. She looked around and saw there was a bus stop just across the road and a shop next to it. She groaned inwardly, imagining the how much her muscles would complain at the thought of it. Luckily it wasnt a busy road, with a car passing only every two or three minutes. Summoning every ounce of strength she could, she slowly limped across the road. As she reached the bus shelter, she let out a gasp of pain and slid down into a seat, leaning against the wall of the shelter from support.  The road had only been 5 or 6 meters wide but it had seemed like 5 or 6 miles.

*********************************************************************************

Jack woke suddenly. He strained his ears to hear what had woken him. Nothing. He frowned. Something wasnt right, he felt uneasy. He swung his legs over the side of the bed and flicked on his beside lamp., he couldnt shake the weird feeling he had.  He sat there for a few seconds and considered ringing Daniel. He glanced at the clock; it was 1:30 in the morning. He shook his head and flicked out his lamp again. What was he thinking? Probably just a bad dream he thought with a sigh. In his heart knowing that wasnt it.

*********************************************************************************

Sam shivered against the cool night air and pulled her jacket closer around her. She had been sitting at the bus stop for just over an hour when a young woman approached. She was slim, around 56 with chocolate brown skin, in her 20s. She wore a tie-died scarf around her head, which allowed her two short but busy pigtails to poke through. Sam, feeling a little better now managed at weak smile, the other girl looked worried.
Hey girl. You ok? She asked, her voice concerned.
Do you know me? Sam asked surprised.
The girl gave a short laugh. If I knew you, dont ya think youd know me?
I dont know. I cant remember anything. Sam answered. The girl looked her up and down.
Did ya lose ya memory or somethin?
I dunno. I guess. Sam shrugged.
Lets get some introductions going here. My names Chenille.
I cant remember what mine is. Sighed Sam, thinking how one way this conversation was going. Chenille gave her a gentle smile and sat down
Whats in the bag? Maybe you wrote your name in it or somethin.
Sam searched her bag and came up with no name. Instead she came up with a wallet, a book, some keys and a pack of tissues.  Unfortunately the wallet didnt have more than a few bucks in it, and no credit cards.
And you cant remember anything at all that could help? Friends, family, phone numbers? Chenille prodded.
No, nothing since I woke up in that ditch. Sam muttered thoughtfully
A ditch? You woke up in a ditch. Chenille repeated slowly, with a weird sense of calm tinted with amazement.
Err... well yeah. Sam admitted
How long ago.
I dont know, about an hour I guess.
An hour! Are you ok? I mean like any broken bones?
No.
Are you sure? I think we should get you to a hospital or something.
No, no. Im ok. Really Im fine.
Are you sure?
Yeah, Im sure. Im just a bit tired thats all.
Chenille sighed. So where are you gonna go?
What?
After this. Are you waiting for the bus or what?.
Oh, Im not sure at the moment.
Just then the bus pulled up.
Okay girl, this is the last bus so I gotta bounce. Chenille said, standing up. But I dont feel right leaving you alone, in the middle of the night at a bus stop.
Oh Ill be ok. Really. It was nice meeting you. Sam smiled.
Thats it girl, youre coming with me. Chenille said picking up Sams bag and getting on the bus.
No its ok. Really, you dont have to. Sam said hurriedly as Chenille stepped onto the bus and requested two tickets.
You aint gotta choice girl. Now get on this damn bus. Chenille demanded as she paid for the fare.
Chenille
Listen. If it makes you feel any better Im not doing this cause I feel sorry for ya. I want a good nights sleep tonight and I aint gonna get if Im lying awake feeling guilty bout leavin you.
Sam smiled and finally climbed onto the bus.
Thank you, Sam said with a grateful smile. This seems kinda weird.
*This* seems weird? Youre sitting in a bus stop, you dont know where you are, where youre going or who you are and *this* seems weird?

*********************************************************************************

The next morning Jack drove up Sams driveway and parked behind her car. He, Tealc and Daniel climbed out and knocked on her door. There was no answer. After knocking several times and peering through the windows, Daniel sat down on the porch step and sighed.
Weird. Doesnt look like shes in. Jack commented
Maybe she just went out to get something, Daniel suggested
Without her car? Jack asked disbelievingly
Maybe.
Doesnt matter we can use the spare key she gave us. Jack said fishing them out of his jacket. Daniel frowned.
She gave us that for emergencies.
Jack just shrugged and grinned as he unlocked the door. She wouldnt want us to wait outside.
It seems unlikely that Major Carter, anticipating our arrival while she is absent, would leave her home locked if she thought we were unable to gain access. Tealc said, following Jack into the house.
Good point Tealc Jack grinned as he headed for the fridge. Daniel sighed and shaking his head shut the door behind him.

*******************************************************************************

Sam woke up the next morning still tired, but glad she could remember last night. A part of her had worried that she wouldnt be able to lay down new memories either. Thankfully that wasnt the case and she could remember last night clearly.
After convincing Chenille that she really didnt need to go to the hospital, Chenille had insisted Sam stay with her, at least for a few days.
Okay, so this is where I crash. Chenille had said as she pushed her front door open and stepped in, Sam following timidly behind her.
It was less actual rooms and more sheets hung from the ceiling, acting as dividers between sections of the flat. The two things to see when you first came in where the kitchen and what looked like the living area. And of course the dividing sheets.
Nearest the door was an L shaped work surface with a stove and oven at one end and a sink at the other. About three steps away from the kitchen was the general living area.
Chenille had lifted one of the sheets and gestured for Sam to go in. You can crash in here.  She had commented as they stepped inside.
It was a small area, maybe 2 meters by 3 meters. There was a small table with a lamb stood at the end of a bed. The bed too was small but with 3 cylinder pillows along the back and one at the head. It looked very comfy, especially to Sam who had woken up in a ditch.

Now the morning sunlight filtered through the sheet that separated her room from the rest of the apartment. Yawning Sam got up and carefully stretched. She still ached but not as bad as yesterday. Her muscles werent badly damaged but shed have a few bruises for a while. Running a hand through her hair Sam lifted the sheet and ducked under it, into the main part of the apartment.
Hey! Chenille greeted her, How are ya feeling?
Ah, better than last night thanks. But I feel like I could sleep for a year. She smiled tiredly.
Here, I made ya some of my mams soup. Chenille said pouring handing her a small bowl.
Sam looked at the dark green liquid suspiciously.
Whats in it?
Different herbs and stuff. Itll help you heal faster.
Sam took a sip of it and tried hard not to pull a face and the horrible taste.
It tastes bad but its good for ya! laughed Chenille, offering her some bread to take the taste away.

Sitting down on one of the cushions and leaning against the wall, she slowly finished her soup. She was feeling pretty much ok. Aching but ok. The worst thing was the splitting headache she had.
So Chenille, youre a cook? she asked.
Not likely! Chenille laughed, taking her soup bowl from her. I work at a club a few blocks from here.
A club, that sounds cool.
Yeah its a lot of fun, but hard work. It doesnt open till the evenings so gives us the day free.
Us?
Oh a group of us set it up. Ada, Rachel, Katy, Senna and me.
You own the place?
Nah not really. Rachel and Ada were my home girls in the beginning. Place came up for rent and Ada went for it. We worked with her and split the takings. Senna and Katy joined the crew later.
Sam closed her eyes briefly; she was struggling to stay awake.
So, I guess its nice to have a queue outside the door, waiting to give you money. She smiled.
Nah, no queue. We dont charge at entrance we make our cash through the drinks. Peeps come and go as they please.
Oh. Sam said, putting a hand to her head. Chenille noticed immediately.
I think you should just take some aspirin and go back to bed.
I only just got up. Sam laughed.
Yeah but Im guessin youve had a rough time recently. Losing your memory and all.
Sam smiled gratefully as Chenille handed her a glass of water and some aspirin.
Now get some sleep. I know ya wanna!

*******************************************************************************

At Sams house, the guys had been there an hour, and they were worried. Theyd rung her phone and got no answer. Checked the base, she hadnt been there. Theyd even rung Janets house but she didnt answer either.
Where could she have gone? Jack demanded angrily.
I dont know Jack, if we did, we wouldnt be here. Daniel said with a sigh as her watched Jack pace back and forth across the kitchen floor. Would you stop that, youre making me dizzy!
Jack glared at him but stopped pacing and sat on a kitchen stool. He began drumming his fingers on the work surface. The doorbell rang making them all jump.
Maybe thats her! Jack said, leaping of the stool so quick he knocked it over.
Of course its not her Jack, Daniel said tiredly why would she ring her own bell?
Meanwhile Tealc had walked over to the front door and opened it to reveal Janet Fraiser.
Hi, Sorry Im late. Wheres Sam? Janet asked putting her bag of food on the table.
We dont know. Daniel said leaning against the wall. Janet looked up in surprise.
Huh?
Shes not here.
What do you mean shes not here? Janet said with a frown
Not. Here. Two words, which one are you having trouble with?! Jack exploded. Daniel gave him a look then turned back to Janet.
He means weve been here an hour and theres been no sign of her. We rang her cell-phone and its off. Shes not at the base. In short we dont know where she is. Daniel finished. Janet paused for a second.
So she wasnt here when you got here? she asked.
No. Daniel answered.
Then howd you get in? Janet asked, gesturing with her hands to the three of them
Spare key. Jack supplied quickly
I thought that was for. Janet began to protest but was stopped by Jack raising a hand
Ok, lay into us later. We have to find her first. He said as he stood up.
Janet sighed with a small smile and hoisted her bag onto the shoulder again.
Oh I wouldnt worry about it. She probably just forgot or something, you know how she is when she gets wrapped up with her work.
So what? We just leave? Jack said, surprised.
Why not? No point in wasting the day. Ill leave her a note to say we came. And then we can give her a hard time on Monday for forgetting.
Tealc agreed immediately, though it took some time for Daniel and Jack to let it go too.

*********************************************************************************
SUNDAY NIGHT / MONDAY MORNING
Sg-1! Sam shouted, waking herself out of a vivid dream. Sg-1? She sat up suddenly.  Thats what shed shouted. What did it mean? She didnt know, couldnt remember the dream anymore. Shed been running. fighting maybe. Fighting what? Who? She sighed and eased herself back down. It was no use, she couldnt remember. She closed her eyes and fell back into an uneasy sleep.

The next morning she awoke, still aching slightly, and shaken by nightmare, but determined to find out who she was.
Hey, Im heading out to work now. We dont open till the evening, but weve called a semi-meeting type thing.
Ok.
Listen, weve been saying for ages we need an extra pair of hands. Interested? Itd get you some cash.
Sam considered it for a second. Why not? She definitely needed the money. But then again, she had woken up in a ditch two nights ago feeling like she fell out of a plane.
Ill think about it. See how I feel tomorrow.
Thats great. I wont tell the girls yet, but if you feel good tomorrow, you can come with me.
Ok that sounds good.

*********************************************************************************

Jack brought his car to a stop in the base car park. He had been deliberately early to check on Sam. He knew she always got to work early than she could. It amazed him how she worked so hard all the time.
As he strode across the parking lot and went through the security checks he thought about what he was going to say to her. Shes probably already hard at work. Jack thought to himself entering the lift. First Ill check shes ok. Then Ill ask where the hell she was!!

*********************************************************************************

Sam sat cross-legged on her bed in her new room and emptied her rucksack out in front of her. The wallet, book keys and tissues all tumbled out onto the bed. She was hoping that something would help her find out who she really was.
She picked up the keys first, staring at them thoughtfully. They didnt tell her much. Two of them looked like they were for door, the third was obviously a car key and the fourth was just a plain key, it couldve been for anything. She sighed and tossed them aside, her eyes next falling on her wallet.
Picking it up she turned it over in her hands. She knew there was no credit or debit cards in there to help but to her surprise she found another pocket behind where they shouldve been. She slid her fingers in a brought out two pictures. This was definitely her wallet.
The first picture showed a group of people in what looked like someones backyard. She was in the foreground of the picture, with a young girl on her lap. They were both giggling but were still looking at the camera. In fact they were only ones who were. In the background there was a barbecue going strong. A well-built, coloured guy had a chefs hat on and was staring intensely at what he was cooking. In front of the barbecue where two other men who seemed to be talking light-heartily while a forth person was placing plates on a picnic table. Sam stared at the picture, analyzing all the people in the photo. She didnt remember them.
After a while she moved on to the second picture. This one was a much closer shot of her and a man from the first picture. It looked like one of those shots for healthy eating adverts. His arms were joined loosely around her neck with her leaning slightly back against him. They were both grinning and with the sun shining on their faces she saw the laughter in their eyes.
She didnt know how long she stared at those pictures, trying desperately to remember. But she couldnt. It seemed that there was a fog over it that she couldnt quite get through. It seemed so familiar and yet.
Sam sighed again and put the picture on top of the discarded key, moving onto the book. She picked it up and looked at the cover, it looked well it looked boring. She flipped it over to the back cover and read the summary, frowned, and then re-read it.  Theoretical astro-physics. One word came into her mind, cool. It was obviously very in-depth but it looked interesting. She opened the first page and slowly read the first paragraph, thinking it over. As she got to the end of the first page she realised it was something she could just about get her head around. Perhaps it was because she had the vague feeling that shed read it before.

*********************************************************************************

General, shes missing and we both know it. Her car is parked at her house and shes not there. She hasnt been back to base since Friday. Jack argued in Hammonds office that evening.
You dont have to convince me Jack, I agree with you.
Ok, so we can set up a search team?
Jack, we have no jurisdiction outside of this base. General Hammond said with a sigh, sinking into his chair.
So youre saying we cant search for her?
No. Im just saying itll be hard. And I cant use the staff this base to help you. For the moment the rest of Sg-1 can proceed in a search for Major Carter. Ill explain in my report its my belief you will be more successful than the police because of her status at this command.
Jack let this sink in for a moment
Thank you Sir.

*********************************************************************************

The bus stopped about a block from the bar, Sam was already finding it easier to move. As they were approaching the bar Chenille stopped to finish her explanation before going in.
And finally Ada. Cool girl. Down in the spiritual area. Very into names and stuff. You give her a name, shell know the meaning like that. Chenille snapped her fingers from emphasis.
Shell give ya a name too. Till you remember yours that is.
Chenille opened the door and went down the stairs into the bar, pausing on the last step as Sam joined her and looked around the place.
It wasnt your stereotypical bar or nightclub, but it wasnt a cafe either. It was more a cross between the two. The main part of the place was the bar. It stretched the whole length of the back wall with a machine playing music that looked almost like a jukebox but not quite. On the opposite side was slightly raised area that over looked the floor. It had 7 or 8 round tables, none of which able to seat more than 4 people. It didnt look like a place youd have a main meal, more like a snack. In fact, Sam noted as she looked around that none of the people sat at the tables were eating. Most had a bottle or glass and were bobbing or tapping to the music. The floor itself had obviously been designed as a large dance floor, and the majority of people their were dancing. However, around the bar many people were standing talking, or ordering drinks.
Chenille, despite being an arms length away, had to shout for Sam to hear her.
The only way you can move in this crowd is to get up close and dance your way through. Chenille shouted to her.  Sam grinned as she watched Chenille throw her hands in the air and dance through. She had to admit it looked likefun.

But, by the time she had reached the room shed seen Chenille head into, she didnt think it was fun anymore. You were squashed by people left right and center and she was feeling very hot. She shook herself out and realized that also in the room with her and Chenille were two other girls. From Chenilles description of them on the bus journey she realised they were the some of the girls who worked here. Chenille grinned at her, shut the door and took her arm
Okay so she began, pointing to the nearest girl
This is Senna Senna was straddled across a chair, leaning her arms on its back. Her jet-black hair streaked down her back ending at her elbows. She popped a bubble she was blowing with her gum and gave a nod in acknowledgement.
And this is Ada. Chenille said gesturing to the girl on a table behind her.
Hey girl, whats ya name?
Oh yeah, Chenille answered before Sam got a chance She needs a name, help her out? Chenille said. To anyone else this wouldve seemed strange, but not to Ada.
A name huh. What kinda one do you want?  Ada asked, pushing herself of the table.
Well began Sam. But she stops, obviously distracted by Ada circling her, looking her up and down.
Wwhat. Hey! Why are you circling me! What were you a vulture in another life? Sam demanded folding her arms. Ada raises her eyebrows, and glanced at Chenille, clearly impressed with her spirit.
Like your spirit girl. What kinda name you want?
Well any really
Never say any! A name has a meaning, says somethin bout you! Ada cried. Sam paused.
Well what does Ada mean then?
Rich gift. Ada and Chenille said in unison.
It suits her. Chenille said with a laugh.
One that will suit me then. Sam said with a shrug.
Thats more like it, what kind of personality do you have.
Um to be honest I dont really know.
Ada looked at Chenille and Chenille rolled her eyes with a grin.
Oh come off it. Since Ive met ya I know already! Strong spirited, a certain pleasantness. Ada trailed off as she gazed at Sam thoughtfully then suddenly asked Hey, smile for me?
Sam laughed at the request, and thus smiled widely, her blue eyes sparkling.
Okay I got it. Ada announced with a smile. Eva means Life. And Evelyn means pleasant. Like either of those?
Eva, Everlyn. Sam repeated slowly, considering them. How about Evie?
Ada nodded, almost to herself, pleased with the outcome. Chenille grinned.

Great! Oh and you gotta meet Katy and Rachel too. Wait a sec. Chenille said as she walked to another door in the room. Sam walked behind her but as she opened the door Chenille turned back to her. Wait here, I saw you try to get through this crowd the first time! she laughed. With that Chenille took off, and began weaving her way through the crowd to what Sam had earlier thought of as some kind of music box. Chenille pushed herself onto the top of it and hit it three times with her fist. The song jumped three times and the two girls at the bar turned their heads to look. Chenille cocked her head towards the room motioning for them to come. One girl had wild red hair pulled back into a topsy-turvy.  She threw one glance at the crowd and without a second thought climbed onto the bar top. She then grabbed the pipe above her head and practically ran down the bar to Chenille, dropping off the other side when she got there. At the same time the other girl at the bar thumped two pints down infront of people then grabbed a microphone that was hanging on the wall and hoisted herself onto the bar. She had straight brown hair, reaching her elbows that she threw over her shoulder and switched the mike on.
BARS CLOSED! BACK IN FIVE! she yelled before tucking the mike into her jeans and turning round. She grabbed the railing above her head like the girl before, but instead of walking along the bar top she gracefully lifted her legs up towards the ceiling and used her feet to bring down and shutter over the bar. She dropped to her knees, still on the bar top and slammed the padlock shut. This all took about 30 seconds. She joined the other two in the same way. They quickly and easily made their way to the room and they shut the door with a slam.
The girl with long brown hair fell backwards onto the small sofa, leaving her legs dangling over the side as she grabbed a magazine. Chenille honey, we have gotta get some extra help with the place. Im flat out already!
Hey I did, if you care to look. Chenille said, snatching the magazine out of her hand.
The girl suddenly noticed Sam for the first time, but she showed no reaction, just bored.
Oh. Hey. She answered, snatching the magazine back.
Cmon Rachel. Adas already got her a name. Its Evie. Give her a chance? Chenille asked pushing herself onto a worktop and rummaging through her bag.
She didnt give the last one a chance what makes you think she will this time? Senna said with a laugh.
Rachel didnt respond, but Sam noted the small grin on her face as she pretended to read the magazine. She looked over the top of the magazine to see Sam looking her way. She was up in a flash, hand on hips infront of Sam, looking her up and down mockingly.
Whatever kind of look you were going for, you missed. Rachel said, her voice challenging. All eyes in the room turned to Sam. She was quick to respond.
Well, I lost my memory recently, but give me a day, Ill be back on track. Sam answered, releasing the best way to deal with this girl was to fight fire with fire, insult with insult. Rachel was now looking her up and down again, shaking her head with a sneer while the rest of the eyes in the room, switching between the two.
Look, I don't know what your problem is, but I'll bet it's hard to pronounce. Sam said quickly, folding her arms across her chest and waiting for a reaction. Rachel looked surprised but hid it quickly. The other girls raised their eyebrows appreciatively and turned their gaze to Rachel.
Oh I dont have a problem. In fact, I'm really easy to get along with, once people learn to worship me.  Rachel said with a glint in her eyes. A few of the girls grinned and their eyes moved to Sam. There was a brief pause before Sam suddenly gave her a gentle smile.
I like you. She said slowly and gently as if she was talking to a small child.  You remind me of when I was young. And stupid.
Everyone grinned and looked at Rachel as a shadow of anger flicked across her face.
I thought you just said you lost your memory. Come back when its convenient does it? Rachel said in a leering tone. Heads turned back to Sam who frowned as if in thought. Whats the matter? Rachel continued, Trying to remember?
The eyes in the room flicked back and forth as a moment pause passed before Sam answered slowly;
No, I'm trying to imagine you with a personality.
Rachel looked at her for a long moment before give a small but genuine smile.
Yeah, youll hack it.
Everyone in the room was smiling and it seemed that somehow Rachels approval was an automatic acceptance. There was banging on the door they had just come through and with a sigh Rachel walked over to it and flung it open. At the same time the girl with red hair approached her, hands in her jeans and Sam now saw she had blue eyes and light freckles.
Hi, Im Kathy, Unlike Rachel I dont work here cause I got a problem with the world. She said with laugh. Rachel caught the last sentence before she closed the door and rolled her eyes.
So why do you? Sam asked, liking the girl already.
Well, it's a thankless job, but I've got a lot of Karma to burn off. She laughed with an infectious smile. It seemed this called for them all to give their reasons. Senna caught her eye from across the room and sighed.
Well I was a art student; but then my professor told me I didnt have any talent or vision. They were wrong; I have plenty of talent and vision. I just don't give a damn.
Sennas drawings are wicked. Chenille added with a smile.
What about you Ada? Whyd you work here? Sam asked, turning to Ada.
Oh I dont work here. She said with a shrug. I have fun here!
Everyone laughed.
Welcome to the club Evie!
