A kitty farewell

A frail, sickly,skinny kitty stumbled into my path.

The site of this poor kitty stirred up all my wrath.

How much love you had to give someone,how little someone cared.

I look into your eyes,you return a distant stare.

Your pain shows in your every move as you start to limp away,

Come back here silly kitty, you're much too weak to stray.

I see your boney skeleton peeking from under matted fur.

What beauty there could have been, if help were only there.

I think of my fat and healthy kitties, safe and warm inside,

And pity the life you spent, now stripped of all your pride.

Your life is nearly over and you look to be near three,

How short your life has been, living life so "free".

I swoop you up and give you fresh water and some feed,

But this is not the only nursing that you need.

Your front paw has been shattered and left to heal alone,

Your eyes are oozing liquid, your frame is skin and bone.

You're too weak to resist the advances of my touch,

You're too sick to be healed; another pets too much.

I take you to the Society that helps poor cats like you,

Yet in my heart I'm knowing there's not much they can do.

The fault goes to the man who neglected you so long,

He thinks you're free and happy, he couldn't be more wrong.

I hope that when your life is over, You'll have no hate towards me

I meant to free your spirit From the pain of being " free."

This poem was written about a stray cat I came across one day while working in the yard.

We had a neighbor who fed cats whenever he remembered . He never gave them proper medical attention when they needed it. He never had them spayed or neutered. And when he moved away in the hottest part of summer, he left them all behind. I had the sad job of capturing them and taking them to the Humane Society.

I could only save one of them since I had cats of my own. Most were visibly sick and there was another one I had planned to keep but she tested positive for feline leukemia.
