Trina:
I hung a little pig keychain in Peep's cage, and he just loves it. He pecks at it and grabs it and tries to yank it right off his cage. I also looped a set of keys around one of Peep's perches. I don't know if he is playing with it or not, he normally takes a few days to play with his new toys... Trina and Peep.
Windy
Today I was using some old jeans material that I got from tearing up some old jeans to use for a makeshift rug for the dogs to wipe their muddy feet on. I also use the jeans legs to make hammocks for my rats. I wonder if a budgie would use one of these hammock/tubes for a makeshift Happy hut. I think I will try it. This type of material will not get snagged in their toenails like a terry cloth might. So here is my idea for a toy and I will try to make it tomorrow and let everyone know how it turns out. I cut off the legs of jeans about ten inches long. With two dowels, or old bird perches I use it to slide them into the pants legs and then make a grove to attach a thick string to it and the top of the cage. I have thought of the string instead of the picture wire that I use in the rats cage because I think the budgies might gnaw on the wire and hurt themselves. The rats do not bother the wire, but birds like to chew things. I used an old parrot ladder once for this instead of a dowel and it worked pretty well. But with two dowels you can stretch them further apart and give the budgies more room to walk around. Toy two: Also I had some sort of rings like shower curtain rings and I cut narrow strips of this jeans material and then tied them onto the ring. I used grey and green and it sort of looked like stiff feathers when I put it in the cage. The budgies ran right over to it and started playing with it.
I took a folding wooden laundry rack, and decorated it with toys and a
millet spray, hooked a few chunks of broccoli here and there, some bits of
string, etc... They got soooooo excited, couldn't decide what to play
with first.
It's very versatile, fun, and cheap too!
Kim and Hannah
I made a toy for my budgie about a week ago. I took a small embroidery hoop and covered it with some craft rope. It takes about five minutes to do and it is ready to hang. Hannah sits up there and chews so it does double duty as a swing and a chew toy. When your budgie is all finished chewing it up just replace the rope and voila its new again. Enjoy!!
Our budgies love chewing on lizard and butterfly
plastic toys our girls had around. The
birds attack and conquer these and have us roaring with
laughter! One even rolls on his back as if
he's losing the battle before he pins it down and hunches
on it with outstretched wings like a
vulture. He also loves carrying, rolling or tossing (over
his head) a blue half of a plastic
container from inside a Kindersurprise egg. Also, when they
sit on my drafting lamp's arm, I tape
thin slivers of trimmed papers for them. They chew and wind
it ecstatically. Knots of string
intrigue them...they love untying them with their tongue if
the knots aren't too tight. Macrame
plant hangers are a favourite also.
