Vatera
Vatera is located in the south of the island Lesvos (50 kilometres from the city Mitilini). The road to Vatera is filled with picturesque green forests that make travelling there a pleasure.
Vatera
offers both a relaxing atmosphere and activity filled events. They include water sports, beach volleyball, fishing, day excursions, boat rides and long or short walks through the surrounding green hills.
The beach of
Vatera is 12 kilometres long and 30-50 metres wide. It cinsists of a mixture of sand and soft pebbles. The Aegean shores offer crystal clear water and it is worth to mention that Vatera has been voted one of the best seasides in the northern hemisphere. It has been repeatedly rewarded with the Blue Flag of th E.U.
On the west side of the seashore you can find the river Almyropotamos, a wetland which is the home for many different are bird species and also a large number of turtles.
Four kilometres from
Vatera Beach you will find the cape of St. Focas, a little scenic fishing port. There you can visit a small chapel situated on a hill. Next to the chapel you will find the remains of the Temple of Dionysus (1st centuty B.C.)
It is worthwhile visiting St. Focas because there you will be able to enjoy one of the most magnificent sunsets of the Aegean.

According to local foklore, amyth continues to exist of the passing of
Achilleas from the region. On the way to St. Focas, you wiil come across the Achilopigado, a well that Achilleas used by giving water to his horses.
