North of Polichnitos at Skala Polichnito you will find the Salt Pans. The pans were naturally made and began from the period of Turkish domination. In winter the sea would enter the field and in summer when the water vaporised the salt would form. In the olden days transport of salt was made by carriages drawn by horses. The salt of Polichnitos is considered one of the best in the whole of Greece. It is very white in colour, full of flavour and it has a substantially large amount of iodine.
In the area of Polichnitos in the green hillsides between Polichnitos and Vasilika you can visit the Monastery Damandriou with the wood carved temple, which was constructed, from earlier parts taken from other old destroyed churches. The ancient frescoes are dating back to the 12th century
Also not very far from there, is the church of St. George Meladas with the old temple and icons. Within the churchyard there are small rooms were pilgrims can stay over night. Both are excellent destinations when walking in the countryside and even to stop for a rest or picnic.
On the road to Achladeri, you will come across a rare natural site for an island. Pictorial waterfalls that are worth seeing! |
