Judaism, Islam, and Christianity, three of the largest religions participated in around the world. All three have very common links to their customs, beliefs, and rules. However, they do have their own distinctions that separate them from each other. God, the world, community, life, and many other issues span the wide area that connect and separate these three religions. “The Absolute”, otherwise known as God is portrayed in different ways through all three religions. Judaism shows God as Yahweh, a caretaker and a god of ultimate power. In the story of Moses with the burning bush, God is shown as one who looks highly upon his chosen people, but at the same time it shows his extreme power when Moses feels uneasy about accepting the task God has given him. Even during the book of Exodus, several signs are shown of God being powerful and vengeful against those who betray him. Muslims believe in Allah, the god prophesied in the Qu’ran and by Muhammad. Their main religion is based on the final reward based on life. Allah is also seen as an all-powerful god, but much less interactive in the history of Islam in comparison to Judaism. This shows a slight change in the worship and ordeals between the two religions. Christianity believes in God, the almighty and caring. Christians believe that God is much more loving and caring, one that forgives us if we are truly sorry for what we have done to offend him. One large contrast between all three religions is their main prophet connected with the religion. Judaism’s prophet is Abraham, Islam’s is Muhammad, and Christianity’s is Jesus. The world that all people live on is seen as a very important factor in all religions around the world. Many of the prophecies, teachings, and revelations are centered on the world and what we do to it. All three religions believe in the sacred protection of the world. Judaism is particularly centered on the fact worshiping the world. During the Jews exodus from Egypt, the land was the one that was able to provide for them and allow them to live. The manna and quail found in the desert was said to be given from God and the earth to the Jews. Muslims and Christians also believe the world is very important. The basic concept found in all three religions is that, if you take care of the world, the world will take care of you. Community and ethics play a large role in the societies of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. Judaism and Islam are religions that have a large influence on government. The current government of both Israelites and Muslims is based off of old religious rules, such as the Five Pillars of Islam and the Ten Commandments. Society as a whole is greatly affected by these two religions. Many of the laws and rules in these two countries are centered on the celebration of their religion. For example, on each religion’s holy day of rest, any sort of work is highly frowned upon. In addition, Muslims observe time during the workday in order to pray towards Allah. Christianity has had a much less influential power on community. Although Christians call for much community effort in religious affairs, there is a less combined effort than with Islam and Judaism. Ethics are a large part of all three religions. The Ten Commandments, Five Pillars of Islam, and the Golden Rule all tell people how they should act with every neighbor they encounter, whether of their religion or not. The life and death of a Jew, Muslim, or Christian are both very important parts of their existence. All three religions call for the same basic principle. If you are good during your life on earth, you will be rewarded in heaven for your goodness. However, each religion takes interpretation on what this means. Judaism tells us that only the chosen people of God will be allowed to enter into heaven with God. On top of this, all Jews must worship and follow God in order to achieve happiness in death. If they disobey him, they will be damned to Hell with all the other unbelievers. Muslims believe something of a similar nature to Judaism, but including another point. Every Muslim must visit Mecca in order to accomplish their life’s goal. Christians believe in a much more passive version of life and death. Christians are told to abide by one main rule, the golden rule. “Treat others as you would want to be treated.” They are to follow this rule throughout their entire life. If they sin against it and God, then they are to repent for their sins. All who try to follow God will be allowed into the Kingdom of Heaven. If you are not allowed in, you will be either sent to Hell or Purgatory. Purgatory is the middle-land between Hell and Heaven. Purgatory is told to be the area where you are examined even further to see which of the two places better suits you. Religious tolerance of other religions is a large issue concerning Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. Religious tolerance with Judaism and Islam is a very interesting situation. These two religions believe that their religion is the one religion in the world that is true. In the more orthodox parts of these two religions, it is told to their people that all other religions are essentially wrong. However, both are told to treat their fellow man with respect, no matter what religion they are. However, some radicals go against this teaching and feel that all others who do not follow their religions are sinners and must be dealt with. Christianity sees a much more broad view of all religions. Christians accept all religions and the people that chose to believe in them. They do fight against any other religions, but rather agree that all people have different ideas on what God is in their life. Judaism, Islam, and Christianity all stem from a common heritage of beliefs and customs. They celebrate their religion to the fullest ability of their being and all share in monotheism. All three religions have a large affect on their community, ethics, beliefs, and morals. These three religions all play a large role in the life of every person who follows them.
