The Friends of the South Bay Bike Path was formed many years ago by Red Cross Spokesperson & former Radio Newscaster & Redondo Beach Commissioner, Dean Francois.  He has worked for Bike Paths throughout the South Bay Area of SoCal.

Pictured above Left is our group working a booth at a recent Earth Day Fair.  That is in a parking lot that no longer exists.  WHY?

Pictured above right is the June 13, 2015 opening of the Hermosa/Redondo Beach Harbor Bikeway now in that Lot and the WALL has come down!!.

PURPOSE:  To Inspire cyclists and users of the Strand and Bike Paths to become involved in local activism and improve and develop more bike paths and lanes in the community.

AND THIS IS HOW WE GET THERE:  To bring a bike path thru King Harbor that extends the Strand in Hermosa and provides a safe place for pedestrians and all users of the strand to enjoy our harbor as close as possible to the water's edge connecting local businesses.

We are now seeking support for a Bike Path that extends the Strand in Hermosa Beach into Redondo Beach away from Harbor Drive that will encorage development in that area seeking a way to convert the old AES Power Plant property to pay for a Park.

HERE IS A RENDITION OF WHAT WE ARE SEEKING:

WHAT WE HAVE DONE:  We pushed the City of Redondo Beach to obtain outside funding and build a beautiful Class 1 Bicycle Path in North Redondo Beach in an underutilized greenspace from power lines connecting the neighborhood providing a route from transit stations to bike lanes.  We linked up with other cycling groups to form the South Bay Bicycle Coalition and develop a Bicycle Masterplan. Years ago, We opposed the congested development plan known as the Heart of the City, which was defeated.  In its place, the city is still wrestling with the fate of the old and outdated power plant.  We worked to oppose Redondo's measure B and it failed.   AES must now come up with somethhing better or the people will come up with a better measure.  We hope that a path can be built through a mixture of business and pay for a Park.

WHAT WE ARE DOING:  We continue to get involved with what happens with the AES power plant site and will work with the development of limited development on both sides of the Bike Path making it a continuation of the Strand in Hermosa Beach.  We seek a better route for cyclists and the public to connect through King Harbor and a good alternative to what is under construction which results in costly, confusing, dangerous, and traffic gridlocking intersections.

SEEKING AN IMPROVEMENT FOR CYCLING IN KING HARBOR AND CONNECTING THE HERMOSA AND REDONDO BIKE PATHS

Click here to read an overview of the issue and challanges ahead as presented in the Sierra Club newsletter.

We feel that what is under construction will discourage people to cycle to the harbor.  Click here for details on the problems with a 2-way bike path on one side of the street.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Cycle Everywhere!!!  Ride on Harbor Drive safely.  Enjoy the beauty that a beach bike path gives you.  Understand how cumbersome the current condition is on Harbor Drive.  Observe the construction.  Ride some more after it is completed.  Beware when you go thru intersections.  See how long one must stop if one tries to obey all traffic laws.  Don't be tempted to run thru red lights.  Don't give up and just avoid the harbor on your bike.  Think about how nice it would be if we had a path thru the harbor instead.  Support efforts to bring a bike path thru our Harbor.  Contact your elected officials in Redondo Beach.
