Hello and welcome. My name is T.D. Ruley and I am a freelance digital artist. I specialize in fantasy esoteric artwork that is sure to please the eye, and give much for the mind to think about. Unfortunately, due to bandwidth issues and other important factors, this site has been slimmed down from it's original size. Even though this site has been "dumbed" down, you won't leave unsatisfied. For now, I plan to use this page as a springboard to all my artwork throughout the net. I hope you enjoy your visit...but make sure to use my links below to see all my artwork I have available online.
My name is Thomas David Ruley and I was born on June 13th, 1977.
I've been an artist in one form or another, for as long as I can remember.
But I wasn't always the artist I am now. I used to be a cartoonist of sorts.
I began drawing cartoons when I was eight years old. It was the only thing I
was capable of drawing at that age. Well, my love for cartoons kept me drawing.
It wasn't until I was in the eighth grade when one of my classmates at school
told me I should draw my own characters. (I was to busy drawing the Simpsons
to come up with my own characters.) But when I did, it was like magic. Suddenly,
I had a way to communicate to people. Under the guise of comics, I ranted about
world events, politics, even my school. Once I graduated from high school, I had
all this spare time to play with. So in the months following graduation, I worked
long hours, day in, day out, trying to come up with storyboards, and new characters
to compliment them. Near the end of 1997, a little more than a year and half after
school ended, I self published my first comic book, W.F.U.S. It was violent, crude,
and halarious from what I've been told. (I'm to modest to admit that myself.) But
due to lack of creativity on my part, I gave it all up four issues in, ending
definitively my career as a comic book artist. I took up painting with watercolors,
and still I didn't have the cutting edge I wanted.
Then, by chance, I bought my first
used computer and that changed everything. I became more geared towards the vibrant colors,
and design possibility that Photoshop offered. After playing with that for some time, I was
introduced to 3D art, and then, my real transformation came about.
I was able to generate perspective and add depth to images now, that I wasn't able to do
any time in the past. I had a brand new canvas to create with, and all the time in the world
to experiment with it. Due to the fact that I learn everything the hard way first, I self-taught
myself everything there was to know about Bryce 4 and 5. Everything from lighting effects to complex
detailing made things difficult at first. It took countless hours sitting diligently
in front of the computer, learning all there was to learn, to get where I am today. Truthfully,
there are some things I'm still learning.
