Resolution 240 (25 October 1967)  – Condemns cease-fire violations, reaffirms necessity of cease-fire, demands involved states cease all military activities and cooperate fully with the UN Truce Supervision Organization. Adopted unanimously.

 "Gravely concerned over recent military activities in the Middle East carried out in spite of the Security Council resolutions ordering a cease-fire,
  • 1. Condemns the violations of the cease-fire;
  • 2. Regrets the casualties and loss of property resulting from the violations;
  • 3. Reaffirms the necessity of the strict observance of the cease-fire resolutions;
  • 4. Demands of the Member States concerned to cease immediately all prohibited military activities in the area, and to co-operate fully and promptly with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization."

Resolution 498 (18 December 1981)  --  Recalling UN Security Council Resolutions 425, 426, 427, 434, 444, 450, 459, 467, 474, 483, 488 and 490, and the importance of strict respect for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and political independence of Lebanon, decides to establish immediately a UN Interim Force (UNIFIL) for Southern Lebanon to confirm Israel's withdraw from that region. Calls for Israel to immediately cease all military action, and withdraw from Lebanon. Condemns all actions interfering with the UNIFIL, commends its efforts and the states supporting it, and renews its mandate for 6 more months. Supports efforts by Lebanon to regain its territory.

  • "2. Reaffirms its past resolutions and particularly its repeated calls upon all concerned for the strict respect of Lebanon's political independence, unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity;
  • 3. Reiterates the Council's determination to implement resolution 425 (1978) in the totality of the area of operations assigned to UNIFIL up to the internationally recognized boundaries so that UNIFIL may fulfil its deployment and so that UNTSO may resume its normal functions, unhindered, under the provisions of the General Armistice Agreement of 1949;
  • 4. Calls upon all concerned to work towards the consolidation of the cease-fire called for by the Security Council in resolution 490 (1981) of 21 July 1981, and reiterate its condemnation of all actions contrary to the provisions of relevant resolutions;"

Resolution 521 (19 September 1982) --  Appalled by the massacre, the Security Council “condemns the criminal massacre of Palestinian civilians in Beirut”, and consequently increases the UN observers from 10 to 50, and insists that all parties cooperate with them.

Requests the Secretary-General as a matter of urgency to initiate appropriate consultations and in particular consultations with the Government of Lebanon on additional steps which the Council might take, including the possible deployment of United Nations forces, to assist that Government in ensuring full protection for the civilian population in and around Beirut and requests him to report to the Council within forty-eight hours;
  • 6. Insists that all concerned must permit United Nations observers and forces established by the Security Council in Lebanon to be deployed and to discharge their mandates and in this connexion solemnly calls attention to the obligation on all Member States under Article 25 of the Charter to accept and carry out the decisions of the Council in accordance with the Charter;"

Resolution 1435 (24 September 2002) Condemns the terrorist attacks on both sides, the reoccupation of the President's offices in Ramallah and many cities, and Israeli military restricting movement leading to state of humanitarian crisis for the Palestinians, repeats demand to end all violence and respect all humanitarian law including Geneva Conventions (1949), and thus that Israel should withdraw from Ramallah and cease destruction of urban infrastructure, while also demanding that the Palestinian authority fulfills its commitments to halt the terrorist attacks, and gives full support to peace efforts of the International Quartet and recognition of the initiative of the Arab League.

"Reaffirming its resolutions 242 (1967) of 22 November 1967, 338 (1973) of 22 October 1973, 1397 (2002) of 12 March 2002, 1402 (2002) of 30 March 2002 and 1403 (2002) of 4 April 2002, as well as the statements of its President, of 10 April 2002 and 18 July 2002,

Reiterating its grave concern at the tragic and violent events that have taken place since September 2000 and the continuous deterioration of the situation,

Condemning all terrorist attacks against any civilians, including the terrorist bombings in Israel on 18 and 19 September 2002 and in a Palestinian school in Hebron on 17 September 2002,

Gravely concerned at the reoccupation of the headquarters of the President of the Palestinian Authority in the City of Ramallah that took place on 19 September 2002 and demanding its immediate end,

Alarmed at the reoccupation of Palestinian cities as well as the severe restrictions imposed on the freedom of movement of persons and goods, and gravely concerned at the humanitarian crisis being faced by the Palestinian people,

Reiterating the need for respect in all circumstances of international humanitarian law, including the Fourth Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, of 12 August 1949,

  • 1. Reiterates its demand for the complete cessation of all acts of violence, including all acts of terror, provocation, incitement and destruction;
  • 2. Demands that Israel immediately cease measures in and around Ramallah including the destruction of Palestinian civilian and security infrastructure;
  • 3. Demands also the expeditious withdrawal of the Israeli occupying forces from Palestinian cities towards the return to the positions held prior to September 2000;
  • 4. Calls on the Palestinian Authority to meet its expressed commitment to ensure that those responsible for terrorist acts are brought to justice by it;"

Resolution 1553 (29 July 2004) --  Recalling Israeli withdrawal, and UN Security Council Resolutions 1308 (2000) and 1325 (2000), and in response to request from government of Lebanon, extends mandate of UN Interim Force (UNIFIL) 6 months, encourages Lebanon government to continue reestablishing its authority, calls on all parties to ensure UNIFIL freedom of movement, supports efforts of UNIFIL to maintain cease-fire despite ongoing violence, which it condemns, and welcomes UNIFIL de-mining efforts and completion of Operation Emirates Solidarity, and efforts of United Nations Truce Supervision Organization.

"Expressing its concern over the tensions and potential for escalation as noted in the Secretary-General's report of 21 July 2004 (S/2004/572),
  • 3. Reiterates its strong support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and political independence of Lebanon within its internationally recognized boundaries;
  • 4. Encourages the Government of Lebanon to continue efforts to ensure the return of its effective authority throughout the south, including the deployment of Lebanese armed forces, stresses the importance of the Government of Lebanon continuing to extend these measures and calls on the Government of Lebanon to do its utmost to ensure a calm environment throughout the south, including along the Blue Line;
  • 5. Calls on the parties to ensure UNIFIL is accorded full freedom of movement in the discharge of its mandate throughout its area of operation as outlined in the Secretary-General's report;
  • 6. Reiterates its call on the parties to continue to fulfil the commitments they have given to respect fully the withdrawal line identified by the United Nations, as set out in the Secretary-General's report of 16 June 2000 (S/2000/590), to exercise utmost restraint and to cooperate fully with the United Nations and UNIFIL;
  • 7. Condemns all acts of violence, expresses great concern about the serious breaches and the sea, land and continuing air violations of the withdrawal line, and urges the parties to put an end to these violations, to refrain from any act or provocation that could further escalate the tension and to abide scrupulously by the obligation to respect the safety of the UNIFIL and other United Nations personnel;"

Resolution 1583 (28 January 2005) --  Recalling Israel's withdrawal, and UN Security Council Resolution 1308 and 1325, and that UN Interim Force (UNIFIL) had fulfilled 2/3 of mandate, but responding to request of Lebanon government, the Security Council extends the UN Interim Force mandate 6 months, and calls for government of Lebanon to restore its authority to whole land, and to all parties to ensure full freedom of movement to UNIFIL.  Condemns continuing violence along Blue Line.  Supports UNIFIL efforts to support cease-fire and continue de-mining efforts, and cooperate with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization.

  • "3. Reiterates its strong support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and political independence of Lebanon within its internationally recognized boundaries and under the sole and exclusive authority of the Government of Lebanon;
  • 4. Condemns all acts of violence, including the recent incidents across the Blue Line that have resulted in the killing and wounding of United Nations military observers, expresses great concern about the serious breaches and the sea, land and continuing air violations of the withdrawal line, and urges the parties to put an end to these violations, to refrain from any act or provocation that could further escalate the tension and to abide scrupulously by their obligation to respect the safety of the UNIFIL and other United Nations personnel;"
