Relevant Major Principles of International Law - 10. Member-nations of the United Nations are required to respect the resolutions of the Security Council, which are legally binding, and enforceable by economic or military means, as the Council decides:
RELEVANT PRINCIPLE OF INTERNATIONAL LAW
The United Nations first came into being on October 24, 1945, in San Francisco, CA, USA, where 50 nations met and signed the Charter. Currently there are 191 member-nations, and numerous other semi-members, such as Palestine, which has status as an official Observer. When nations join the United Nations, they sign an agreement and a pledge to obey the decisions of the United Nations, of which only the decisions (resolutions) of the Security Council are actually legally binding. The State of Israel was accepted into the United Nations with full member-status with Resolution 69 (4 March 1949), but since that time has violated more UN resolutions than any other member-nation. |
