Save Our Seine looks to city for support

The city needs to take steps to protect the Seine River before it is too late.
Save Our Seine member Jean-Pierre Brunet took that message to the Riel community committee recently.
In May, the province passed a private members bill aimed at protecting the Seine River. The city needs to do the same, said Brunet.
(The Seine) is an ecological tract of wilderness that is worthy of protection. Any urban centre would give its eye teeth for a natural resource like this, Brunet said.
Brunet said several Save Our Seine members are taking part in a city task force study which is expected to table a report this fall.
However, Brunet said he wanted to make his groups position - apart from the task force - known to Riel councillors.
As a group, weve taken a fairly moderate position, said Brunet. Were not anti-development. Were merely asking if we need to park (developments) near such a fragile piece of land.
Brunet also said the city should implement a stringent set of guidelines regarding development along the Seine River.
Developers should conform to the guidelines, or make a very good case as to why they cant, he said.
The committee approved Brunets recommendations in principle, and referred them to the committee on protection, parks and culture (PPC) for consideration.
Riel councillors also asked that SOS be given a copy of the Administrative Seine River Task Force study once it has been finalized.
That way, SOS members will be able to comment on the study before it goes before the Riel community committee and the PPC committee.
