Province lends support to Seine River

The province will become a partner with the community in preserving the Seine River.
After some debate, a private members resolution was passed unanimously in the Manitoba legislature Thursday.
The resolution asks that all levels of government do what is reasonably desirable to protect the Seine for future generations.
The resolution was initially introduced by MLA Neil Gaudry (St. Boniface). An amended resolution was supported by Conservative MLAs Shirley Render (St. Vital) and David Newman (Riel).
Newman says the resolution will be given to the promotion and protection of the area. Its unusual to have such as wonderful environmental presence right in the city, he said. The resolution has drawn attention to the fact through the debate itself. It also directs all governments - provincial, municipal and federal - to take responsibility for preserving the site.
The Seine River, which runs through St. Vital and St. Boniface, provides a natural habitat for vegetation and wildlife. The river is also historically significant in that it has ties to Louis Riel and the Lagimodiere homestead as well as to early francophone settlers.
A group of concerned citizens formed Save Our Seine in 1990. Since then the group has worked to make people aware of the historical significance and recreational potential of the site.
