| Freeze of project urged (Newspaper article 1975?) A building permit freeze was recommended by civic environment committee Monday for the Seine River site of the grist, carding and stamping mill of Louis Riel Sr. Committee referred the matter of acquiring the property to the citys board of commissioners for a report. The area, west of the Seine and north of John Bruce Road in St. Vital was owned by the Riel family in the last century. The mill was one of three believed to have existed in the area and a millpond and homestead were also located on the land. Near the site, old farm buildings which may have been built by Louis Riel descendents are being demolished in preparation for a home for the elderly and the environmental planning department was concerned that further building might encroach on the historic land. |
