Kavanagh Park Restoration Project

Save Our Seine (SOS) is a group of concerned citizens who have worked together for over ten years to clean up and protect the Seine River. Dedicated volunteers have worked tirelessly to rid the river of trash that has accumulated over the years and to preserve some of Winnipegs most beautiful stretches of riverbank. In 1997, SOS took on a new challenge: rehabilitating segments of riverbank back to the native riparian habitat. The Kavanagh Park section of riverbank had most of its vegetation removed the previous year when city crews carried out a bank stabilization project. Other sections were identified as needing canopy or under story restoration in a study commissioned by Winnipegs Seine River Task Force.
A combination of native trees and bushes were planted at various sites along the Seine between the Red River and Marion Street. The Kavanagh Park restoration included seeding native prairie grasses as well as tree cover concentrated at the rivers edge. Reestablishing native tree species such as green ash, Manitoba maple, bur oak, choke cherry, and bare root green ash, helps to preserve examples of ecosystems unique to the area. Replacing lost vegetation also provides much needed habitat for urban wildlife.
Action 21 provided $25,000 to the project, which had a total value of $53,718. Other contributions were made by the City of Winnipeg, Province of Manitoba, corporate donors, and Save Our Seine volunteers.
