| Summer River Crew From mid-May to the end of August 1996 a river crew consisting of six students carried out another successful clean-up of the Seine River. Although the water was unusually high this summer, tons of metal debris, garbage and log blockages were cleared from the river at sites between the Red River and the floodway (approx. 23 km). The crew removed items such as a stove, a complete bed, couches, 9 bicycles, numerous tires and 48 shopping carts. Unfortunately, as the water recedes more debris will surface in identified problem areas. Since 1993 student Green Teams under the supervision of S.O.S.board members have worked along the Seine River during the summer cleaning up logjams and debris between the flood way and its mouth by the Red River. The students also planted and cared for close to 1000 saplings and seedlings as follow-up work after the spring greening. Large amounts of Purple Loosestrife were also removed from the riverbank. The plant has infiltrated many areas along the river north of Morier Park. Efforts were made to educate residents about this noxious weed but many people refuse to recognize the risks associated with growing it in their gardens. by David Hunt Crew Supervisor Financial assistance for these projects are obtained through Manitoba Urban Green Team, Canada Human Resource Development Summer Career Placement and the On-Site Program. |
